This article on C|Net states that,

QUOTE
Google executives say they plan to unveil Wednesday a "communications tool" that is potentially a clear step beyond the company's search-related business focus.

While executives would not disclose what the new software tool might be, Google has long been expected to introduce an instant-messaging service to compete with services offered by America Online, Yahoo and MSN from Microsoft.

Could this be a Google IM we've been hearing rumors about for years?
henbenley
didnt they just have a press release about not having a google IM client last week or something?? or maybe ive gone crazy
Archerzz
If it is a google IM type thing they should try to make it so you can chat with people who have AIM, MSN and the other big im programs.

Just a random thought.
spazmire11
thats not realy origanol tho look at gaim it will do yahoo, aol, msn and icq
personaly it might be a bit of a trouble for everyone tto switch dont you think?
Archerzz
Thats why if you get google IM (if it comes out biggrin.gif) you will be able to transfer your buddy lists from MSN, AIM, and yahoo. and chat with them through the Google IM, they wont have to change at all. I would change to google just because I get really bored, and I need something to do biggrin.gif
SMeeD
Thats why there is Gaim and Trillian Basic/Pro. I think people are too set in to their IM programs to switch to a totaly different network, but if they were to introduce a Trillian or Gaim type Im program they might do ok.

You have to remember, Google is a competitor to Yahoo and Microsoft on many fronts. It wouldn't make much since for them to include the formats from rivals in a product like this, that'd be like Google Search linking to MSN or Yahoo....

That is, assuming that there will be a Google IM released, remember that's just a rumor.

Just speculation, but I'd think if Google did release an IM client, it would display ads similar to how AIM/ICQ does. Maybe even scanning conversations like GMail and Google Groups and then displaying relivent ads.

I do think it'd be up Google's ally to release a Google IM API/SDK where people could create plugins to conect to AIM, ICQ, YIM, MSN, and other protocols, that would be the most logical thing given Google's past history with all of their other applications. Google Desktop Search SDK, Google ADWords API, Google Search API, ..... and so many others.

I think that the Sidebar found in Google Desktop Search 2.0 (Beta) would work pretty well with (or as) an IM client.

Humm or maybe it's a google OS laugh.gif ok maybe not, we could just wait and see....

Hmm...maybe a Google VOIP? Now that would be cool.
Propane
google IM is based on jabber... therfore any client that currentlly supports jabber (mannnny) should be able to connect to the google service...

Ive had "google IM" now for about a year :-\

I just went on a bit of a ramble on my personal site about the C|Net article I liked to in the first post... it's to long to repost here, but if ya want to read it it is here.

The first part basically restates what I said above in post #7. tongue.gif

Who know if it comes out it could be the biggest messager on the interenet.
sykocus
is Elvis going to help launch it also tongue.gif
Kash
Hey, I'd use it just for fun. I haven't tried out new random software in a while.
Jeremy
Don't think too many people would switch to it if it was a stand-alone messenger. If it was an allinone thing though, I'd probably give it a try.

If it is an IM program I imagine it will have something special. Everything google has done so far has always beaten the competitors in some way. Gmail had a freakin gig of storage. I don't know what they could possibly do to an instant messenger to make it beat the others, but if it is I'm sure it will rock.
CmpFreak88
It will be a teleporter so that when you click on someones name you get teleported right in front of them.

But really what could really be done to an IM program that hasn't already been done and that people will really use?
lilkev715
I just downloaded it @ 10pm PST. You need a Gmail account in order to use it for now.

QUOTE(Google Talk Website)
11. Do I see ads when I use Google Talk?

We aren't showing any ads on Google Talk. There are no pop-ups or clutter—just a clean and simple interface to make it easy for you to communicate instantly with your friends.

15. What new features are you working on?

We could tell you, but then you'd have to promise to not talk about it... Joking aside, Google Talk is still in beta, and we're working hard to add features and make improvements. We're just not quite ready yet to reveal the other cool things we've got planned. We can say this, though: we believe strongly in user choice and open standards, and we are committed to letting users access Google Talk using the client and platform of their choice, as well as to enabling our users to talk with users from other service providers.

We also want to keep making Google Talk better and we want your ideas and feedback to help make this happen! Talk to us using the Help link in the Google Talk interface. Let us know what you like, what you don't like, and what you'd really like.

I think they just killed AIM, lol

Doesn't seem to be the case just by looking at the Beta. Too plain and not enough features. If they actually put in all the features they have planned, then it might get close to competing on AIM's level.
CmpFreak88
I'm hooked on the no ads tongue.gif

Doesnt look anything special
