Full Version: Looking For A New *quality* Power Supply
OverclockersClub Forums > Hardware > Modding, Cases & Power Supplies
Eurotrance
After reading about how psu's can sometimes fry your motherboard, I have finally figured out how my motherboard was fried a few months ago (which led me to upgrade to an amd 64) I am now using the same power supply... and I do not want it to happen again. I am looking for a power supply that is fairly priced and has a good brand and can also support all my stuff. I would like it if it had blue lights (if any) and cheap.

I like this one, but I dont know how good the brand is.

btw I am looking towards a 500w+ psu
Any suggestions would be nice biggrin.gif

X-connect psus suck.

or so ive heard

edit: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...=905184&CatId=0

that one looks ok.
Fried_fry
thats a pretty nice psu but i have herd some bad reviews on them. But then again it all comes to personal choice, its great for wire managment!
jammin
Most ppl around here would tell you to stay away from the x-connect.
I haven't had personal experience with them, but there are certainly more established quality brands out there.

My number one recommendation for a quality PSU is obviously gonna be PCP&C, however they are expensive. (keep in mind you get what you pay for) Another one you can look into is the OCZ Powerstream 520W. That would be my number two choice smile.gif
Eurotrance
what about this one? it looks nice

One thing to consider when buying a quality PSU - Don't base it on what it looks like.

very good point, in fact the flashier ones are usually the lesser quality ones...
Eurotrance
yeah i understand. ok, all im looking for now is a good psu, and im just hoping it can go my colour scheme. I'm wanting it to be pre-sleeved uv blue. Is that too much to ask? Is it just me or is it hard to find a nice looking good quality psu? PS: i hate the colour green.

Unless you're looking indside the PSU of course, then what it looks like might actually be a pretty good indication to quality.

If you really want us to help you out, you haven't listed your complete system specs and price range for a PSU.
danyo64
you could go with an ocz modstream.. if u want presleeved i think frozen cpu does sleaving with their PSUs for a couple bucks .. not sure if thats the right site though .. and i dont know if they deliver to canada.. powerstream comes sleaved .. not color sleeves tho .. but still .. its sleeved..
Eurotrance
ok my full specs are:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2ghz w/ Thermaltake TR2 M6 Cpu Fan
Mach Speed Viper K8M8MS Motherboard
XFX GeForce 6600 256MB AGP w/Dual DVI/TV-OUT
w/ Vantec Spectrum PCI Fan Card
512mb DDR PC2700 RAM
60gig + 80gig HDDs
Sony Dual Layer DVD Burner
LG CD Burner 52x32x52x
450w Power Supply Unit
Windows XP Professional
2x Blue 2x Red CCFL
Black Raidmax Scorpio Case

I am currently using a 450w power supply (the one that fscked my old hardware up) and my price range is... I dont really have one. Lets just say I don't have a job, but I want one that isnt as bad as what I have already (some noname psu that came with my computer) I'd have to say... 150 CDN is probably too much.

EDIT: btw sorry for all the extra stuff.. i just copied and pasted it from somewhere i had it, im soo lazy.
lilkev715
Do you have any personal preferance of websites to order from? The selection from Tigerdirect sucks IMO, I'm looking at NCIX.com right now.
danyo64
MUST BE CANADIAN ...

or at least ship to canada
Eurotrance
ive never heard of that site. uhm I'd like to order it from Tigerdirect or ExtremePc (www.extreme-pc.ca) but that site seems good if I find something good.

EDIT: yes danyo knows what i want lol
lilkev715
NCIX has both a Canadian and USA store. Also I forgot to mention, the majority of quality PSU's don't have the wires pre-sleeved. Even if you did find one pre-sleeved, it may not be in the color choice of your liking. You can always sleeve a PSU yourself, but it takes time to do so.
Eurotrance
i like the
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...re=COOLERMASTER
and
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...CZ%20Technology
but i would much rather get a 500w one. but 150 dollars is just too much.
lilkev715
Since you wanted pre-sleeved cables and a blue LED fan I'd have to recommend the OCZ Modstream 450watt PSU. It has a 20+4 pin ATX connector so you will be able to use it for future systems that use a 24-pin ATX connector. It is also pci express ready which is a good thing.
jammin
I would also plump for the OCZ from those 2.
The coolermaster has got some good review though, It was on my considered list when I was looking for a new PSU (very happy with my Tagan).
ccokeman
I know you need a canadian site But i usethis enermax psu and the rails hold up extremely well. This pic is while under load. Had this one for about 8 months now and its been great. Not pretty to look at but it ho;ds up well.
3700@2.8
5 120mm fans
X800XL
DFI NF-4 ultra-d
3 hdd
DVD r-w
Ste
I will be the best person to tell you not to get an X-connect, cause I "had" one.
Flashstar
Get either a Forton clue storm or a Seasonic psu.

The blue storm would work the best for you because it come spre sleeved and with a blue chassis.
DECwakeboarder
And I may be the first to tell you that they aren't really bad PSU's mine is fairly stable (after modding the fans) and I got it for $40+a nice case.

BTW: the 'newer' 500w version is the one I'm refering to...AFAIK, the 'older' 500w one wasn't great and all the 400 watters suck.
Ste
when u describe a PSU as "not really bad" I wouldn't buy it.
but whatever not my computer.
DECwakeboarder
Try 12.1v, 4.9v and 3.25v average loaded...
danyo64
if ur thinkin modstram think of the comp that andy built at lanfest guelph ... *drool DROOL* .. he used a 520 modstream ... very nice ... GO WITH THE MODSTREAM!!!! or go for broke and get a 600w powerstream... or the 850w pc p&c on on xiodide...
Eurotrance
i dont have an endless supply of money, danyo.
tnactim
I think I saw another post about it...
www.frozencpu.com does wire sleeving (UV or otherwise) on nearly anything they sell. Don't know if they ship to Canada though...
Ste
Next to the CPU you should spend the greater portion of money on a great PSU. you can't go wrong if you do so.

If you go to www.frozencpu.com and buy an OCZ powerstream or something form them they will sleeve it for you for a small fee.
danyo64
i know you dont have an endless supply of money ... i was jk with the 850 pc p&c.
