Ok i borrowed my friends ram (G skill 4400) and stuck it in my comp and started xperimenting on how far my cpu could go (this is how i spend my summer vacation) and it got to 4.05 Ghz before it got unstable and i ran OCCT on it to see if it were stable. 20 seconds into OCCT the rails on the 12v dipped so low (11.2) and i heard a pop and the entire comp shut down.

i put back my cruddy ddr 400 and the my mobo reset itself after the OC (i luv asus biggrin.gif ) and everything seemes to work fine... Did i blow something? Did the PSU shutdown because their was too much draw? Their was no way my rig was anywhere near the 500 watt or the maximum of the 12v rail...

X-Connects are horrid for build quality. The pop you heard was a capacitor inside the PSU. The power supply couldn't hold its own and basically blew up in attempts to do so.
Silverfox
buuut...the psu still works?
FxXP
Could have been circuit protection in the PSU, a fuse, who knows.
jammin
Yeah, all depends on the sound really. I doubt it would still work if a cap had blown.
It could have just been one of circuit protections kicking in that made the noise. I know that the psu's I've used have made some kind of noise when protection kicks in, but this has been more like switch noise (like you might get when you shut your computer down normally).
If you're worried about it I would get in contact with support staff for your psu and see what they recommend.

My X-Connect has very strong rails, and can really stay strong during overclocking. It's weakness is the 3.3v rail, I have to set a divider on my TCCD RAM to get my CPU up to it's potential. My Patriot RAM actually came witha chart that showed what it was rated to run at along with the voltages and timings it needed to do it. It can do PC4200 @ 2.9v (2.5-3-3-7-1T). I can't really get it there though. For one thing, my mobo doesn't support VDIMM that high, and my X-Connect doesn't hold the 3.3v at that voltage. I had only read really good reviews of the X-Connect when I bought it, and stil have yet to find a poor review. I have only heard complaints from users. With a pop like that I would recomend pulling the PSU, opening it up, and checking the caps, pots, etc. You wouldn't want to have any of your other components get fried.
jammin
How longs the warranty? Because if you open it up yourself to check it you're going to automatically void it.
Sagittaria
I already opened it... There's no sign of a blown capictor but jeez the heatsinks on this thing is small, I didn't even no that it had a waranty. Well it can't be a capiciter, lol i had an old super crappy psu from acer which blew up in my face, i mean literaly, i blown a fuse in our house too when it go boom. LoL part of the psu caught fire, wish i had a pic...

Yeah your probobly right. Another question, I just bought a x800 XTPE(woot biggrin.gif ) which is going to replace my current 9600 pro, do you think this psu can hold it?
chavalcito
It should be fine if you are not overclocking.

So you're saying that your current system was able to make this PSU puke, so now you're going to do a major video card upgrade and you want to know how the same PSU will do?

If your power supply can't support what you have with a 9600 pro, what makes you think it can with an x800xtpe? I would say you should swap that PSU, and soon. The fact that it's puked like that even once would be enough to make me doubt it, and now with that new graphics card you'll surely be asking a lot more of it.

Some people seem to do just fine with X-Connects, but I have read a lot of bad reviews, and given how they're priced verses other PSUs with similar ratings, it's easy to see why they get bad reviews. Sure they're cheap for the wattage, and they look really nice, but personally I'd rather have stability than looks.

Read the entire thread tongue.gif , I oc'd my system by 900 mhz 1:1. All i'm saying is that will it be ok on stock. Doesn't matter anyways just placed in order for a OCZ modstream 520...

I understand that you OCed it because I did read the thread. What I'm saying is that the PSU puked when you pushed your current system. Is a 900mhz OC the same power draw as an upgrade to a x800? Who knows?! I don't, but I sure as crap wouldn't want to gamble all my hardware on it.

Like I said, I would upgrade. And you did. I think that OCZ will be a lot more stable for you than the X-Connect. With a great VGU like that, I wouldn't take any chances with a questionable PSU.

So you really like modular power supplies, huh?
FxXP
Basically any system that can draw over 400w can make an X-Connect puke.
CNUco2007
yea they really are garbage. they're fine if ur running stock though. i replaced mine w/ a PCP&C 510W Turbo Express biggrin.gif
CoolMaster
I think I Was looking into getting a Neopower 480 Modular Power supply, those look really good
chavalcito
Neo Power would be my suggestion for a modular PSU.
confuzzedintelguy
Well i have had a X-Connect for about half a year and the first month it worked good then the rails started to drop i modded it got the rail back up to a o.k. range and now this thing just plain sucks, its holding me back and i regret ever paying 100 bucks for it considering it performs worse or just as bad i should say as my generic 15 dollar on did. As for a modular the OCZ modstream should be a awsome psu, ocz makes quallity products and have awsome tech support.
CoolMaster
Dang ive heard nothing but bad stuff about those x-connects
At Xiode.com or whatever their selling them for 30 bucks with rebate, I WONDER WHY
SEE SEE I told u you should get suspicious about good deals

EDIT:Omg at Xoide or (i always forget how to spell it) they are 20 bucks A PIECE for a 400 watt, whichever with mail in rebate
for that cheap they must've had some bad returns on them. sorry but ive heard very few good things about the x-connect
Sagittaria
Sigh.. I only bought it because it loooked cool, had great reviews, and was modular... and was the most expensive on they had(i kinda shop like that...)
DECwakeboarder
I did the fan mod on my X-Connect and the rails are stable at just over 12, right at 5 and just over 3.3
chavalcito
The fan mod seems to do the trick, but i am a little scared to do it.
