Well i came up with a random idea while talking to my friend.

I was thinking, itd be cool if i could share some of my data with him.. .but he lives like 30 miles away and i dont want to lug my massive computer over there to make a hardwire connection... and dont want to send it over internet cause its too slow... his computer doesnt have any SATA connectors and mine are all SATA... so i was thinking, it'd be cool if i could make an enclosure to hold all my harddrives (ATM just 2 storage harddrives) in some sort of box-like-thing that you hook up the sata cables into the box and it converts the signal to IDE or ethernet or something that you can hook up to any computer so you can share data.

Is this feasable? just a random idea that popped into my head.

him buying a sata pci controller would probably be cheaper than you buying a box and a converter for each drive...

anything you are thinking of involving a network-based storage drive or some sort of ide-sata converter is gonna cost more...

That would be really cool though. I have often wanted a storage enclosure that would be modifyable, yet support ethernet USB and fire wire.

The closest thing that i have seen is a Metal Gear Box, but that is only USB and firewire.

I have one ant i like it a whole lot.

If you want something similar check out at:

I think you will find something that will help

The mod might be cool, but why not just buy an external usb hd. That would be portable.

you can buy enclosures that convert to either USB or firewire and have a net plug to hook to a lan

I was going to say cant you buy them already unsure.gif

Linksys NAS (or something like that) basically a little computer that you plug a USB hard drive into and it shares it on your network.

Could you use CD's/DVD's?

I just went out and bought a WD 120 G external harddrive for 130 and it works fine. I would just look into getting something like that, if you really need it.

Or go with a cheap ATA load your files in and just exchange for one of his once you're there and same the other way as long as your mobo has ATA connectors
