im building a new rig and need a nice stable psu.... the only thing i will probably overclock is the video card but i might try the cpu some to......

specs
amb x2 4200+
Asus A8N-SLI
PNY 7800gtx
2 gigs ram.

whats a good psu say under or around $100...
roadkill
erm... no psu under 100 will be able to handle that rig..

that 850w (950w peak) pc power and cooling would be good though smile.gif

well i dont think he needs the 850Watt, but i would suggest going w/ PCP&C for sure. I'm going to recommend the 510W SLI or Express. If your gonna drop that much money on your computer, why not drop a good amount on a PSU to power it all?
Nagash
I know that you can get a Forton for under $100 that would power that system just fine. This one would have plenty of power for his system.
CNUco2007
but why would you pay top dollar for all high end stuff and then skimp on a medeiocre PSU that will just Get By. Why not spend top dollar on the PSU as well so you know everything is sufficiently powered and will be for a long time to come.
Nagash
Forton does NOT make mediocore power supplies.

This whole "mediocore powersupplies are bad" talk is getting a little out of hand. Every single person that posts here asking a question about a PSU he wants to get is slapped in the face by a wet noodle by people telling them that they need to spend 200 dollars on a powersupply... cmon guys, not everyone has the money to do that and some people dont have a steady income so they cannot save very well. Would you like to be computerless for a month while you were saving for one part on your computer when you could have bought the 60 dollar psu for a good temporary?
Sylo
i figured $100 was a fair amont to spend on a power supply, i am not goin with sli yet so the system should not take that much power, i just got the sli mobo so that it would be easier to upgrade in a year or so....

these ones seem good to me, but i am no expert on power supplys so any input would be good

OCZ ModStream OCZ52012U ATX 520W Power Supply

FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX500-A ATX12V 500W Power Supply

AeroCool Silver Line AEROPOWER II SL550 ATX 550W Power Supply

OCZ OCZ520ADJ ATX 520W Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817104152

the last one is a bit more then i wanted to send but if the system is really goin to need it then i guess ill get it.... i thought that a 7800 used less power then a 6800 and i know alot of people get by with $50 400wat powersupply...

Edit: im not sure what one if any of the ones i listed have pcie power but that would be a plus to have since that is what the video card will have on it.
Kash
All four of those power supplies will perform great in your new rig. The last one would obviously be the best, though the other three are quite capable as well.

Don't knock on the Aerocool power supply. I have one, it weighs an absolute ton (positive indicator of a good PSU), and the rails are rock solid. I read reviews of it before I bought it and I even measured the rails myself with a multimeter and they fluctuate no more than 0.50% to 1.00%. Considering the fact that most PSUs can fluctuate all the way up to 5% or more, that is pretty darn good. Then there are 30amps on the 12v rail (the only other PSU amongst your choices with more amps is the OCZ Powerstream). Plus, it looks good too biggrin.gif

dude, im recommending this on a case specific basis. he is buying all top end parts. an X2, and a 7800. he is obviously not strapped for cash. i would never recommend a PCP&C for someone who only has money to build a Sempron system.

Also, you can take any mediocre power supply and put it up against a PCP&C and i am will to bet money that the PCP&C will not only last longer but also put out cleaner more constant power. Keep in mind, you pay for what you get. if your only going to pay a small amount of money, dont expect to get much.

I can tell you right now, if you get a garbage psu that craps out in a couple years, assuming it doesnt take out anything with it, your gonna have to wait while either the PSU is RMA'd or you purchase a new one.

Most mediocre PSU's have a 1 year warrenty. PCP&C has a 5 yr warrenty as does OCZ Powerstream. Why should you think that mediocre psu will last more than a year if they dont even think it will?

Now i ask this again... why will you spend top dollar for other componants but not for the psu when everything in the system depends on the psu?

*edit* If you dont want to spend the money on the PCP&C, then i would recommend the OCZ Powerstream. It is also rock solid and a great performer. I have a friend with one. although it is a little longer the the PCP&C, its still runs great.
Sylo
thx for the input, im sure the pcp&c is a sweet psu but $230 is a bit much for me, i have about a $1600 budget to make a desktop for 3d rendering and gaming, i guess ill go with the ocz Powerstream i think it should run everything i am buying...
CNUco2007
Yea, the OCZ will work great. It has 1% voltage regulation and will actually output the power it states. You wont be dissapointed smile.gif

This thread is a great read for someone who is looking for a new power supply. Everyone should give it a look.
