hey all,
so i have seen PSU testers in local PC shops and keep wanting to get one as i have a PSU that is causing me problems. But i was also wondering, can these things be used to power up PSU's for lengthy amounts of time without using a motherboard?
thanks

I think that they do.

What I think he meant was that if something as simple as a paperclip can keep a PSU running for a long time, I'm pretty sure a PSU tester, something much more complicated, should be able to do so as well.

Those cheap PSU testers are not meant to be used for more than a few minutes - they have little resistors in them to put a small load on the PSU and will quickly overheat and burn up.
