I'll probably be doing a number of similar topics over the next few weeks.

The idea for it actually came from BloodySunday.
So, what one brand do you like the most? Why? That's this weeks poll.

whoever said maxtor, they are the worst. =D
but I picked Western Digital. it has never failed me. it worked under really hot conditions and humid. That thing has never ever failed me. unlike some other hard drives.

though quantum shouldn't count, since they're now "maxtor" I still voted for them. I have quite a few of thier high speed scsi drives that have never failed me.
maxtor is next. I've only had a hand full of thier drives fail.
WD is okay, Hitachi is pretty good, IBM is now hitachi, and seagate NEEDS that warranty. thier new bearings are supposed to be so great, yet they sound like a rusty chain saw and last just as long

it was a close call between Hitachi and Seagate, i have pure Hitachi in my main rig and Seagate/IBM-Hitachi in my 2nd rig... over the years i've also had Maxtor and WD... i can't remember any others
the Hitachis and Seagates have always lasted way over the warranty but Hitachis take it for me because of the price/performance/noise/reliability factors

WD... I love mah raptors, no problems with them at all, even after lots of video editing. Also have the WD 80gig special edition. All are quiet, and all are fast.

I said WD, I've had quite a few die on me, but I think most of them were my fault and their no questions asked advanced return thing is really nice...new HD in less than a week, don't have to wait around for the normal 2 month RMA from most companies.

most of mine have been WD, and they've been great. I think I put a maxtor in my family's comp, and no problems there, but WD's got the raptors, and they just kick butt.

Maxtor in my machine. First one started making a whining sound, but Maxtor sent me the new drive so I could get all my stuff off before I had to send the bad drive back. Also, the whining wasn't actually data loss. So really, no major problems with Maxtor for me, they've been good to me (and my friends WD had the exact same whining problem happen to him, sooo... only WD didn't seem to be able to send out the new drive first?)
@bigred: Thought seagate were supposed to be really good! I was thinking about getting one of their >250gb drives, the new 7200.8 things. Maybe I won't now though..

EDIT: oh yeah, I am tired, I was also going to say that I have never even actually had a hard disk die on me over the past..... lots of years.

From my experience, Maxtors and Hitachis/IBMs suck. WDs are okay, and I like the Samsungs and Seagates.

Seagate an WD for desktop (voted Seagate bc they have always seemed quieter overall to me)
Toshiba for Laptop, cool silent, reliable HDDs (I have a 4GB that has been dropped countless time in an external enclosure and it's only lost data ONCE)

I prefer Maxtors. I have 2 80GBs, 1 300GB and 1 WD 200GB. I've had the 80GBs for two years now and I haven't had any problems with them.

Seagate. All of my drives that I've had for long periods of time have been seagate. 4 x 7200.7's, 4 x cheetah 10K's, 2 x barracuda 7200 SCSI.
Best thing about them is they are dang near silent!
I've also had a 2 WD caviar's and they were great too
