Hello,

i am planning on putting my old computer which is now my file server along with 2 more file servers and a web server into one wooden cupboard to save spacei have it all planned out including airflow thanks to my little brother. All i am needing to know now is what parts need earthing to the PSU, I am pretty sure that the motherboard will not need earthing but i am not sure about other hardware. could someone please advise me on this before i go ahead with the build.

and also does anyone know of a UK manifacturer of 150mm fans? if so can you point me 2 them.

thank you for your time

you could probably get 150mm fans online at RS http://www.rswww.com

>>>> Electrical | Fans/Thermal Management | DC Axial Fans

in that section, probably not all that cheap :|

Earthing is what our British friends call grounding.

biggrin.gif I just made my briefcase computer and put it in my cupboard to replace my old home server. I haven't grounded the motherboard to the PSU yet, like I had planned, and it's working just fine.

nrg, i told you, no more silly words, like chips, boobys, earthing. But i know of a guy who did that, and he fried his mobo by fogeting to GROUND it. (it was jsut a celeron 2GHz, no biggy)

Yeah... that's what he said.

Sounds like an interesting project. I wish I had a few extra computers sitting around the house. sad.gif
bobthefish
well this is gonna b a new project...

I will keep this topic updated with photos n stuff... when i get the money to start it... (it sucks not having a job) hehe

thank you ppl.

i shud eath my mobo to the PSU. will it be the same for HDD and CD ROM etc?

i imagine it will be but plz correct me if i'm wrong.

also where abouts on my mobo should i put the earthing connection?
markiemrboo
If you're going to then you can use the pads around the "normal" motherboard mounting holes to attach an earth wire to. But like I said, I havent done that in my speshul computer in the cupboard yet and its been running fine for 7 days now.

I am pretty sure it gets earthed by the 20 pin plugs earth wires (the black wires on the 20 pin connector and 4 pin molexes)?
bobthefish
both me and my dad thought that but we havent been to sure about it. i just wanted to be sure before i do it so i dont blow my mobo. otherwise i have to use a jetway motherboard *shudders in disgrace*
mantonr
i'm not sure you have to earth anything as such. If your in the UK then the top pin on the plug that provides ur PSU with power is the earth for the PSU and because everything else has an individual earthing wire to the PSU everything is earthed through that.

So just plug it in
bobthefish
excellent... well i am starting the project tomorrow so i will post some pictures up as i go along during the day.

Thank you for all or your advice people, much appreciated

I don't think grounding/earthing is necesarry with ATX power supplies. They have plently of ground wires in the ATX plug.

I know I've run a few mobos in cardboard boxes, and I've always been fine.

well i just finished cleaning out my cupboard/desk where the comp is gonna go. all the wood on the desk is at least a 1/2 inch thick, i'm planning on mounting the CD drive on a 45 degree angle out the bottom of the deskand having all the cables come out the bottom aswell... hehe this should be fun tongue.gif if anyone has any other suggestions please leave a post

thanks
