I am no artist but i have a friend who is smile.gif.

At the moment i need a 120mm cover but i want to make it myself, Its going to be made out of plexi and sanded with a crazy fine grit (2000 or higher) so its kinda hazy lookin, but you can still see through.

The haze was a random idea when i wanted to see what sanded plexi would look like. It looks pretty cool with lights off especially. Anyways, since it is made of plexi and the design will probably be pretty detailed -what in the world can i use to cut plexi cleanly-?

Dremel will not do, plasma would melt it etc. etc. so what do i use and where do i get it? i was thinking a tiny drill bit with water supply at all times might do it but i have no idea. If i have to then i will get a metal grill but id rather be creative.

any ideas on the design or how to cut it? i will borrow someones digi cam so i can post my case... not too impressive but i guess im proud tongue.gif.
Fanatic
Dremel with etching bit. I know you said it was out, but it is the best way I can think of.
Bleeble
Dremel and sand the edges, no more rough spots.

k guess thats what ill end up doin thx folk smile.gif

i used a dremel to cut a little fan grill in my side plexi.. it came out good except i didnt sand the edges down good enough afterwards... theres a pic in my case gallery where u can possible see where i cut it out and u can see the design.. its the intake fan blowing onto cpu from side panel

remember in class when i printed out that fan whole designs and told u i wanted to put it on plexi? tongue.gif

This is what i was goin for... i didnt really explain it well.

I need a larger square piece (6-7 in) to cut a design into and then make it an overlayed grill thats spaced about 1/2 inch from the case. This was just to clarify... and umm do you like the idea?

You can always get some mini files for detailing, i beleive you can get a set at RS if not , any electronics store but it'll be a long work. laugh.gif

quick sketch of what i wanna do.

[attachmentid=13694]

like i said quick sketch but its what im goin for, the lesser of the two will be the existing plexi and the circular pattern holes and the middle eye will be cut out.

you like? critique it please smile.gif
The_WRATH
wow thats interesting
looks almost like an ordinary fan gril, but slighty tweaked lol
im interested in how your gonna do the eye, would be hard wouldnt it?
take a stab at it if you havent yet biggrin.gif
Onyks
lol havent yet but i will in less than a month, prom and all that money spendin crap is keepin me from buying materials. not to mention gas being... 2.22? or somethin crazy like that... i try not to look anymore.

glad it is of interest smile.gif
Vasto
Make sure that it is durable enought to be able to take some abuse. Otherwise you may want to make multiples.
Onyks
good point vasto tis what ill have to do. Maybe a solution... i was planning on having it in a larger square, it wouldnt be freestanding as a 120mm circle. it would be cut into a larger square so that should add some support.
The_WRATH
actually gas is about 2.80 now....id start cursing but it would just get changed to crap this and crap that

Where do you live Wrath? Here in central IL we are supposed to have the highestest taxes on gas and it was about $2.10 last I saw, was up around $2.35 tho.

May the plastics fabricator cut in here? tongue.gif biggrin.gif

If you can be patient and wait a few months I'll probobly be on the CNC router finally here at my job and I'll be able to cut you something that delicate and precise in seconds, and I'll only charge you for the material, not labor.

And to clarify I wouldn't use plexiglass (which is not the correct name by the way, plexiglass is a generic name most commonly used for the material polycarbonate) I WOULD use acrylic for this job, it cuts cleaner than polycarbonate.

So yea my $.02... closedeyes.gif

hey cool, ummm lol i dunno about the few months deal, i think i could manage. i know there is such a thing as colored acrylic so could it possibly be a light/neon green acrylic cover? that would fit perfectly.

pm me if and when youd like, ill come up with some dimensions soon. also a roundabout guess of how much would be nice too smile.gif.

and i like to say plexi not polly tongue.gif lol

oh also is it like a water cutter? i dont know how to explain that statement other than i have seen sheet metal cutters that use waterjet(s) to cut things. jus curious
Vaelen2001
i have colored acrylic... not neon.. but colored... i have orange, blue, red, yellow, green, white, black, clear, ect...

i would like dimensions as soon as you can get them.

and water cutting is called Water Jetting, and no i do not have that machine, only CNC.

they can cut plastic but its pointless because water jetting is designed to cut metal and cool the metal at the same time. cutting plastic with a water jetting would be just too costly, because CNC does it cheaper, due to the lack of coolant (water and coolant) needed.
