Okay my old 350w psu just isn't cutting it. On wattage alone it's not enough not to mention it has horrible rails and likes to get hot. So based on my system what you guys suggest for me.

A64 2800 (9 x 270 2.43ghz)
DFI Lanparty ut nf3 250gb
512mb Patriot pc4000
ATI 9600 (432 core/215 memory)
52x24 cd burner
40gb harddrive
ATI TV Wonder VE

I'm wanting to spend around 50$ (will go up to 100 but i really don't want to). I'd like it to have at the very least 400w. And some decent rails because the rails on my psu right now are holding back my overclock. I don't care alot about looks cause my next case I'm goin no window. It would be nice if it were sleeved or maybe even like the x-connect so i don't have to have all the cables. Also I plan on getting a new 80-120gb hard drive and an x800xt. Thanks for any suggestions

Well, if you buy an Antec 480w TruePower like what I have, you'll be covered when you do the future power-hungry upgrades that are inevitable.

If you get a bare-minimum unit now, you'll be bummed later because you'll have the same problems again before too long, so you'll need to replace it then anyway...

My advice is get something that's at least 20% more than you need now. If you buy quality, your PSU can migrate to just about any new rigs and run them with power to spare, and you will have chosen wisely.

yes they are over 50$ but you want a good powersupply, thats not going to die on you or fry your other components. I personally recommend the zippy but all are good psus.
caffeinejunkie
yeah i guess it would be a good idea to invest some money in a future proof psu. What kind rails does that antec have?
Awesomedudde
if you are future proofing, you can go a higher end zippy or pcp&c (really high end psus.)
caffeinejunkie
i'm really liking that zippy it has some good rails and not a bad price.

I have the Antec TrueBlue 480W, great PSU imo, well worth the £70

Cause when I build my new rig, I am probs gonna transfer this over.

If you like that ZIppy, then I would suggest you take a gander at the SilverStone for a few dollars more. I believe you'll find it much more future proof, as it has 20/24-pin connector, active PFC, dual 12V rails, SATA power connectors and PCI express connectors.

They have also just released a 650W version as well with quad 12V rails.

That silverstones a beast blink.gif i'm goin with it thanks everyone for your suggestions

i've personally never heard of silverstone and can't vouche for how well the line regulation is, but if i had to take a stab there prolly some low quality rebrander not trying to point fingers but thats usually what it means, the zippy has 1% line regulation, and the atx standard is 5% so you know there wont be a lot of fluctuation on the line, also zippys are rated at 40 C most psu's are rated at 25C and as the temp. goes up the power goes down.

You might want to do some research then because SilverStome is quickly becoming well-respected for their cases - the company is only a couple of years old and is made up of many former CoolerMaster engineers. They are definitely not a low-quality rebrander. Their case was the one used in this year's MaximumPC Dream Machine. While you're correct that it's rated at 25*C, it'll stack up well against the likes of the Antec TruPower 550 (I happen to own both). It's not a PCP&C unit, but for the price it's a very nice unit.

PC Power and Cooling mentioned by Awesomedudde would be your best choice there, thier PSU's are beyond beastly... they'll mkae your jaw drop

ok i said i didn't know and was making generalizations about "new psu" manufacturers, I just wanted to point out the zippy was a high end psu, and i had not heard of silverstone and it was most likely still not as good.

i too am in the market for a new power supply, that silverstone looks really nice, but i have a question about dual 12v rail psu's

it says it has 16amps and 15 amps on each rail respectively, is that the same as one 12v rail at 31 amps? i am thinking it is and it just balances the load better divided into two?

Yup, the dual rails puts less strain on each other.

okay, check this out

i submitted a question, can't figure out how a new $200 psu would be $20 unless it freaks out somehow.....but Paypal can guarantee my funds so.....i'm really tempted

Yeah, i'm also looking for a new psu.. my current one (antec sl350) is bad.. caps are leaking sad.gif

So.. at first I looked at the antec true480blue, but there were a substantial amount of complaints on both the true480 and the true480blue about the thing frying there computer, or atleast frying itself.

I don't want that to happen.... and my current power supply almost frying my shtuff doesn't help the situation.

So, i looked into pcp&c. Their "power supply selecter" chose a Silencer 410 for me...

I don't want to spend alot of money on this, but I don't want my stuff to have much chance of frying either. I would really like a 510 deluxe, but I really don't need it smile.gif

I NEED a power supply that i can use for a few years.. including upgrading...

at max, i want to be able to run..
-intel dual core chip (only one chip)
-6800gt (not sli)
-2x sata hd's
-1.5/2gb ram

and that's about it, as far as power goes. So, will the 410 silencer do that for me, or what?

Also, the 510 deluxe comes sleeved.. what about the 410 silencer? prolly not, just hoping smile.gif

edit: actually i just found out'about the turbo-cool 425 deluxe, which would probably be fine over the 510 for the above list...
425 is $150... dunno where to buy it though, newegg doesn't sell it.. probably just direct =/

ooh.. aother edit!1!!!!!

So, the 425 deluxe is the ONLY turbo-cool or silencer that doesn't support PFC..... what is pfc? do i need it?

OMFG ANOTHER EDIT!!!!!! okay, i just read what pfc is... and the site, weither it was being biased or not, said that europe has benned non-pfc power supplies.. i don't live in europe, but if it is banned i europe, i don't think it's the best idea to buy.... i mean.. why would they make a non-pfc power supply?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?1?!?!????????????????

OMFGOMFGOMFG!!!! ABNOTHER ETDFKT!!!
Okay, so this time... wait.. if i get a pci-e graphics card sometime down the line... I would have to have a Express/SLI Power supply? with the pci-e connector? or do they all have regular molex connector inputs in addition to/instead of pci-e connecters?1?~!?!?!?!?!?!?

Well, take a look at a new player in the psu game (well, I just heard about them) http://www.ocia.net/reviews/ultra/page1.shtml. The Ultras really clean up the wiring in the case. I bought one for the kit I am building; the cables are a little stiff but you can work with them and you only have to plug in the cables you are going to use - you don't have all that extra wiring flopping around. the psu costs between us$60 & 100 so shop around. This brings up something I just noticed -- the back of my S ATA drive has the standard 4 pin power connector and the newer power connection also, does it matter which I use? Probably not. Anyway, the Ultra looks pretty kool and all the reviews are positive and if I ever get my kit up and running (see other posts my travails), it will probably be at least sufficient if not down right attractive.

If the sheer technical prowess of them doesn't make your jaw drop, the price sure will!
