So i call my local (and most popular and respected) computer store; i ask them whether they have any serial or usb port lcd screens, or any VFDs. The guy was extremely confused for a couple of seconds, and proceeded to tell me that he has no idea what I'm talking about. I gave examples -- they didn't help.

Am i going to have to buy these online? I'm looking for a simple usb port lcd screen. By the way, what is the main difference between VFD and LCD (someone said VFDs are lower quality, but i am not so sure).

How about a fan control kit (e.g. DIY Rheobus kit). I saw a tutorial at http://www.bit-tech.net/article/40/ , and wondered where i could purchase such a thing at a retail store. Is this likely? How about radioshack?

Thanks.

imo matrix orbital makes the best lcd/vfds out there and you can order them directly from their website http://www.matrixorbital.com. the main differences between lcd's and vfds are VFD are brighter and aren't as affected by temperature changes, such as if you were going to be using one out doors.
