Hey, am putting together a new cpu and just noticed that the mother board power input has 24 pins, i have heard that a 20 pin might work with it if the amperage is right but how do i tell? or does anyone know where i can get a new 24 pin psu for say under $75 needs to be 480+ watts and look somewhat nice since i have a clear case.

Also i have been looking for them on new egg but can tell if they have 20 or 24 pins so if anyone knows how to tell please let me know as well

thanks for the help
bishop245
what motherboard do you have that will help us most of all to answer you
AMD_Wannabe
24 pin in a straight block of 20 pin and a seperate 4 pin
Sylo
the motherboard am getting is the ASUS "P5AD2 Premium" 925X

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc....ufactory=BROWSE

I have a 500 max arrow switching power supply with 20 pin and a smaller 4 pin though the power input on the motherboard is just a single 24 pin slot so am not sure if it will work with that mother board or not.
Seth_Man
that 24 pin is for an eps power supply, its not required for that board but it supports it. you can use a normal atx psu on it.
Sylo
Would I notice a difference in performance between the epc and atx power supplies will a generic 500w power supply be enough power to run a p4 3.4; 1gig ddr2 pc 5400, ati x800 xt, and 2 hard drives without messing up or should I spend the extra money to get a different psu?
Paranoid
I wouldn't trust a generic 500w to power all of that.
Sylo
what kind of power supply would you recommend using?
Paranoid
This is what I'm using with my Opterons. It has the 24-pin connector (both versions), and it's stable as a rock. You pay for quality when it comes to Power Supplies.
Paranoid
It does NOT take an EPS12V power supply. It takes a 24-pin ATX power supply like the one I linked.
Shadowfactor
get the Antec 24 pin one you listed
Sylo
what do you think about this power supply?

i know it is not as nice as the one you linked but $160 is alot for psu
Nemo
Another option might be to get a quality ATX power supply with the standard 20-pin ATX connector and get a 20-to-24 pin cable like this.
Sylo
what do you guys think about the power supply that comes in this combo?

is it good or is it just a pos?

That one would most likely be a total P.O.S...

I beg to differ. A EPS 12v PSU will work absolutely fine in any setup (except for propietary setups like Dell). Currently, regular 20-pin ATX PSU's will work fine on a 24-pin mobo connector like on the newer 915/925 mobo setups. Anandtech demonstrated this with a 20-pin 350watt PSU plugged into a 24-pin connector on the mobo without any problems.

Back to your origianl question on a new PSU, I can recommend two good ones that are both EPS12V. I would choose a EPS12V PSU because it can guarantee future compatibility with the BTX standard. Plus, if you ever decide on running a dual CPU setup, it will be able to power that as well (a bit overkill).

E-Power "Tagan" 480watt

or

PCMCIS 550watt PSU

Both PSU's are EPS12v compliant. Meaning that they have the 24-pin atx connector, 8-pin 12v dual cpu connector, and the regular 4-pin 12v connector. The Tagan features Active PFC for greater power efficiency as well as being able to handle any AC input. The PCMCIS is also nice as well but it does not feature active PFC. I myself own the PCMCIS and I can upload/send you pictures if you would like. With both of these PSU's, they are right under the $80 mark so they are not too expensive. The Antec's/Enermax PSU's are nice, but they are a bit over-priced for what you get compared to the competition.
Sylo
hey, i like the PCMCIS 550watt PSU though i also have another one that i am looking at

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc....ufactory=BROWSE

not sure how good it is just like the way it looks since i am getting an acrlic case, though would rather have better psu then look but anyway i dont know much about power supplies so let me know what you think out of these two

thanks

That PSU could work, but it is a bit expensive for the "bling bling" looks. If I had to choose between the Aerocool or the PCMCIS, I'd rather go with the PCMCIS. The pictures at newegg aren't really that great. Here is a picture of the PCMCIS PSU in real life.

The finish is really like a mirror, no camera tricks there.
MindDrive
you should sleeve that power supply !!!

this is the power supply im using (the blue plexi and silver case) and its working great:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/se...nf=1867&cat=106

one thing i DONT like about it is that it "spikes" on some motherboards if you flip the -|o switch when its plugged in (all the fans light up for a split second)
suchuwato
yeah, that can really screw up your machine

Get a antec 480watts or if your looking to spend money and you never have power problmes that much you could ge this one. it look good too.

antecs are good power supplies

I go with lego antec is good brand. I use them in my cases.
cheesewiz6
I have an antec in my +3000 and I am happy but if I could do it all over again I would use a Vantec Stealth. I use the Stealth on my AMD 64 +3200. Both PCs have asus mother boards and with asus probe both psus get ruler strait graphs but my voltages are further off on the antec. The stealth is a 24-pin and comes with a 20 pin adapter for 20 pin mobos.

12 volt Antec 11.7 Vantec 11.9
5 volt Antec 4.9 Vantec 5.0
3.3 volt Antec 3.2 Vantec 3.3
v-core Antec 1.5 Vantec 1.5

Both sets of specs are acceptible and like I said they are both solid and stable but the vantec stands out. Also I have a 6800 gt on the stealth and it is sata compatable.

Also on the reviews about the volume of the psu I think the guys are smoking crake cant hear mine with my case open deffinatly can't with it closed. I am guessing it could have been a bad batch or something.
