Hi,
Does anyone know many many volts and amps are supplied from a USB?

The reason I ask is that my external HD power supply has died :-( and I thought I many be able to rig up a power supply from the USB. I'm not sure though if the USB will be able to supply enough power.

I need 12v @ 3amps.

Maybe someone knows a link to a website that describes this?

If i remember correctly, which I may not be, usb runs at 5volts?

USB barely powers my two zalman 92mm fans I use for notebook cooler
so ya powering A hard drive is kinda out of the question unless it is one of the specail ones that is designed for and yes the make them a teach of mine had one you can get'em on newegg there like 250usd for 30gb though

take your harddrives power supply - goto radioshack and you should be able to find a switchable 12V power supply - say the radioshack puts out 6 amps - thats OK cause thats the MAX it "can" put out - if your drive only takes 3 amps then thats all its gonna take - do a little wire splicing - and viola all fixed

it has all of the normal cords and their voltages and also what cord supplies the power and the data and so on.

Might have to change the power to the usb or get a new set.
