got mad looking for "pre built" water cooling pumps and tanks cause i dont buy online and computer stores dont carry crap unless its like 300 bucks SOOOOOoooo.......

in the middle of a brainstorm and listening to noise from my puter's speakers, i seen under a pile of crap in my room, an external sony cdrw drive without the drive and just looked at it - i originaly tried to put a harddrive in it with no luck sad.gif but then as soon as i seen the RCA audio cables i thought of IN and OUT hoses and started hacking the thing apart

didnt have much actual mod'n to do other than caulking the crap out of every seam - it is as though it was ment to be how smoovely this went together!!!!

i got a submersable pump that fits perfectly inside the outer shell of the case (luck of the draw). i popped out the universal power chord plug and caulked the pump to the back of the metal plate and it sits just a little off of what would be the new bottom

for the opening in the front of the drive i caulked the breather holes from the inside and cut the plastic package the pump came in to fit just a little bigger than the drive opening on the inside and caulked that in tight as to view liquid levels -i tore out the power switch which leaves just enough space to put a valve to fill fluid

the left and right audio outs which are RCA jacks are the perfect size to run hoses through and run a bead of caulk around which are right above the pump. I ran the inlet hose to the front of the tank to run down the clear plastic covering the cdrom opening (to make sure the pump is still pumping)

some of the cool things bout this mod is that the cdrom case has aqua colored rubber feet on the edges in a way that there is no "UP" or "DOWN" if it wasnt for the front piece then it wouldnt matter what way it stood up

when i get to use my gf's digital camera ill post some pics of this portable water pump/tank mod

Sounds like a great idea mind, yea, get some pics, Im lookin to make some of my own w/c stuff when I get my new processor and mobo....

OK YAY ive created a great lil pump/tank - water tight and silent !!!!!!!! the power supply in my tower is louder than the pump and its quiet - with the puter shut off you CANT hear a thing even sitting right next to the mod'd drive case

the front window is clear and very well sealed - from the inside and outside - the same with the back metal pannel - to protect against rust i coated the whole back pannel with caulk. (kinda messy looking sad.gif )

in the drawing i kinda outlined where the hoses were going and where the pump is. that way - anyone with one of these laying around can duplicate it happy.gif - took roughly 8 1/2 hours to complete - from first screw till water going in - the hose in the front is to fill and for venting since this is air and water tight - i dont like having the idea of expantion and contration so i vent the system from time to time to protect against ruptures. looking through the window - i put the return hose end real close to it so i can see coolant somewhat splashing around.

the pump pushes 60GPh and the tank holds about a quart and a half of coolant tho i havnt measured it - im just guessing by putting a quart of oil next to it lol

then i made the hoses coming out of the back of the housing about 6 inches and shoved a cut up bic pen in each end about an inch and a half long. then i ran the hoses out of my radiator and waterblock into the pump hoses - the pump is so fast that it instantly pushed all the air right out of the whole system in a split second!!! i even tilted the puter around and nothing no air at all happy.gif

this whole system runs just a little warmer idle than with air cooling (i put antifreeze in the tank and sadly im still using the aquarius II's radiator) but the Load temps are about the same as air cooling - i still need to lap the P4 heat spreader badly - the corners are kind of bowed upward so the center of the chip doesnt really touch teh surface sad.gif

and well anyway here are some pics :

with the pump above

new hoses - instead of using silicone 1/4" hose from the aquariusII kit - i am using 3/8" clear nylon pluming hose - 24 cents a foot from hardware store happy.gif

instead of using the aquariusII's radiator (took advice of so many members here) i was searching car parts stores for a transmition oil cooler or a heater core (didnt want a junkyard dirty one) and i met a guy that sold me his radiator from his motorcycle he had laying in parts in his garage for 25 bucks. suprizingly clean for being used

the radiator is about 4 inches tall (120mm fan fits it perfectly) and a lil over 3 120mm fans long by an inch and a half thick

the "cores" are about 1/8" thick and inch n a half wide, the whole thing is gloss black. i had to take the original hoses off - didnt want to - but the metal was pretty dang sharp and i already had 1 run in with the metal hose tearing the silicone hose - thats why i went with nylon instead - durability DONT FOR THE LOVE THAT IS ALL ELECTRICAL USE SILICONE HOSE !!!!! OH MAN JUST SAY NO!!!!!

anyway - at the same hardware store i bought 3/8" plastic hose fittings for 2 reasons - 1 they are plastic and dont have sharp burrs , and 2 the threds on the radiator are metric and everywhere around here doesnt sell metric threaded plumbing supplies so i had to shave some of the threading off and force new threads on it (worked pretty good actually)

then i changed the fittings on the zalman waterblock to the largest ones they supplied - i love the threaded fittings as opposed to quick-release snap in - dont trust snap together parts - never have - ever since i was a child putting together models *image fades in of model parts on the floor all broken to pieces and 6 year old bawling his eyes out* HAHAHHAHaH SUCKER sorry get carried away sometimes............

in comparison to the aquariusII this whole kit from scratch cost me:
$54 for the Zalman ZM-WB2 or is it 1 :S from TigerDirect Naperville Illinois store
$25 for the crotch rocket radiator from some dude (forgot his dang name)
$13 for the 60GpH fountain pump from Big R's in Morris Illinois
$10 for the 9ft of hose and the fittings and hose clamps from True Value Gilbert, Arizona
$free sony spressa usb cdrw drive case from pile of crap in room
$bonus clear plastic window for spressa case from pump package
busted knuckles, wet carpet and experiance points *Priceless* wink.gif heheh had to do it

the aquariusII kit:
$119 at Fry's Electrics here in tempe arizona
total amount of gratification - nill but it was a great starter kit and was full of learning possibilities. Its a great thing that Fry's took the kit back - many props to Fry's !!! - the only thing i forgot to put back in the kit was the metal sticker plate that was on the resovoir tank that i pulled off an put on my cdrom filler bay thingy plate :S sorry my bad

after 50+ hours of bashing and cool down at 100% load on my processor my temps are now 109 MAX!!!! i havnt been able to get it over 109 even if i unplug the 120mm fan on the radiator, previously they were (on air) 131~135, aquariusII- 125~131, with the TEC 176 (no it wasnt backwards - my p4's heatshield was warped sad.gif i have since then lapped the p4 till i seen copper all the way across and has a mirror finish so when i am done blasting this puter with this set up i am going to once again add the TEC/pelt and see if my cooling is cold enough to handle the stress - i am not using a hardcore pelt just 51W i just want below 95F on a full load - LMAO im getting my puter loaded - its a lush now
confuzzedintelguy
what temps do you have now that you upgraded your kit??

EDIT: o ya im sertified geek now tongue.gif
MindDrive
*RIGHT NOW* my temp is 91~93 idle
