i recently got a new psu for myself.......the 300 watter wasnt nuff for some of my stuff so i got a demon 480w psu with dual led fans from newegg for about $31. I was on a budget

well anyways as soon as i got this psu i connected it to a normal outlet to check it out cause i needed to see if it works here...im going abroad and need to take it with me. Wel when i turn it on the red power button at the back turns on but the psu makes a faint noise and none of the led fans turn on

i was sure from the voltage selector i kept it at 115v so it cant realy be the psu itself but the connecting wire had 250v~ written on it.....so now is it the wire? is the psu working fine(worried cause the fans arent turning on,i havent connected it to a pc yet, or is that normal?? its my first psu upgrade as well so dont know much bout it) anyways thanks for the help...

About the 115/240 or what ever most psu dont have the 240 wire connected so if it is on that position your psu will not work.

Umm- I may be completely wrong here, but most, if not all, computer PSUs are switching power supplies. Turning one on without it hooked to a PC is not going to do anything. I tried the same thing with mine to test out some fans - it didn't work. There was nothing wrong with the PSU, it just needs to be connected to the mobo. There's a way to test it out by shorting two of the jumpers on the 20-pin Molex connector and I don't remember which two. Someone posted which two here within the last few days. Do a search before you RMA it.
Edit:
Check
here for a way to test to see if your PSU is good w/o hooking it to your mobo

yes if i am under standing him right he is trying to power on th psu with out connecting it to the computer , are you using a psu tester? if not then no it wont power on with out being conencted to a computer and in turn no fans will spin up try hooking it to the computer it should run fine

Stick a wire in these sockets on the 20 pin connector. Note the position relative to the clip.

Referring to r-target's picture above, the green wire is pin 14 (PS-ON) and the black wire is pin 15 (GND). Using his excellent picture, Pin 1 is in the lower left hand corner. Pin 10 is in the lower right hand corner. Pin 11 is in the upper left hand corner, pin 20 is in the upper right hand corner.
Once you get this resolved, remember to

these are the pins to connect together

If your testing it outside the system, some psu's require atleast one thing connected to the 4 pin molex. I know mine is like that. So get a case fan, or a hd and try it. Or just stick it in your case for christs sake!! lol

i actually have the same power supply and situation you have, yesterday i jump started the power supply and it ran smoothly powering some fans and cold cathodes. just put a paper clip in the wire harness to connect the green wire to the black wire then cover with electrical tape.
hope that helps
