Full Version: Is It Possible To Fit A Duct In My Case?

Well im gonna buy a windowed side panel for my Chieftec/Antec case, and i was hoping to fit a duct from the cpu to the window. But i dont think it's possible in this case since it has a handle on the panel. Anyone know if it's possible? Would it work it the duct had to be bent a little? huh.gif
r_target
Looks like the handle is close enough to the back that it wouldn't interfere.

A duct dosn't have to be straight most use that flexible drier (but smaller) duct and there is that duct kit that sunbeam sells that fits perfectly a 80mm fan, just make sure your fan has enough cfm for the lenth of the duct wink.gif

Cool, thanx for the help guys. now all i gotta do is find a store in the UK who sell ducts ph34r.gif

Hope that helps in your quest to find a duct mod store in the UK.

maybe put ur duct on a rear fan.. sucking air into the duct

Thanx, but thats not what im after. It's the one with the hose thingy reaching accross to a fan on the case window. Im still looking around though, if worst comes to worst ill look on ebay wink.gif

home depot or similar hardware store should have what your looking for
HomerJaySimpson
We dont have Home Depot in the UK tongue.gif
henbenley
forgot that you were in the UK but any hardware store should have something like it

try to make sure theres a fan on both sides of the pipe

Yeah that was the idea. I looked at the review for the Sunbeam duct, whoever reviewed it wasnt impressed at all. Though it did give a 3c drop in temps. But they had it going from the front of the case and then flowing out the back. I think just a straight pipe from the window to the cpu fan would be more efficent. Ill keep my eyes open for a duct, thanx for all the help guys, appreciated smile.gif

Homer, They sell those ducting mods at Maplin stores. Cos I was gonna get one last time I went into Norwich... But my girlfriend woudn't let me (they're quite expensive)
HomerJaySimpson
Cool, thanx Jezza, ill take a look smile.gif

also, the 4inch flexible pvc ducting hose at B&Q (look in bathroom ventilation section)

i did a bit of maths, and the circumference of a 4inch diameter is about a mm longer than the perimeter of an 80mm square - don't worry, the theory ends there, i actually bought some and its in use in my rig! biggrin.gif

ie. the 4 inch ducting hose will fit around an 80mm fan... it cost like 5-6 quid for a metre of the stuff... get some duct tape (naturally) as well so you can tape the ends of - there's a wire coil running through it that keeps it from collapsing in on itself, so just put some tape around the end to kind of cuff it off... the idea being that you don't have a bare metal wire dangling around inside your case potentially shorting your mobo, graphics card, etc...

if you go for the 2 fan idea, make sure they are the same airflow rating... probably better would be to have just one high powered one at the cpu end and just a fan with the guts pulled out (frame only) on the side panel... just to reduce noise...
HomerJaySimpson
Nice to see you back hardnrg smile.gif

I took a look on B&Q and found some ducting so ill head down there tomorrow. How much did it help your temps? rolleyes.gif
hardnrg
smile.gif nice to have the net again... oh yeah, and to be back on occ of course laugh.gif around 5-7"C drop...
shibby_geek_guy_69
could also use sum of that sellys all clear to seal round the deges of the fan. it would work reall, and kick you kno wat.

do you mean this is what you are afterhere

Yeah thats what im after. But the sucky UK comp stores dont sell em. But thanx to hardnrg i've tracked down a duct and the rest is DIY smile.gif
hardnrg
hey, you can thank me again, cos I've found a UK supplier!
http://www.chill-tek.com/products/fan-grills.html

not sure if its worth the 15 quid... but hey, it'll reduce your temps... just how much is hard to say...

Did anyone try with the B&Q PVC stuff? I was thinking about giving it a go. 4" is 100mm though, seems quite a way off 80mm to me... How have you attached it to the fan/fan hole? Any pics? Anyone tried that kit too?

I was thinking of attaching one of those blue 120mm - 80mm fan adapters to my radiator and then somehow attaching the PVC tube to that to a 92mm or 80mm hole....... dunno if that'll work though.

try:

[circumference of 4 inch ducting]

circumference = 2 x PI x radius
2 x radius = diameter
so, substitute diameter instead of (2 x radius)
circumference = diameter x PI

circumference = 4" x Pi = 12.567"

convert inches to mm using 1" = 25.4mm

12.567" x 25.4mm = 319mm

[perimeter of 80mm fan]

perimeter of a square = 4 x each side

4 x 80mm = 320mm

smile.gif maths, gotta love it!
markiemrboo
Oooh right. So it'd go over the fan almost perfect because it is a square, I wondered what all the maths was about for a minute!

In that case I should be able to fit it over one of my 80mm fans in the back then, it's one of those plastic purple chieftec fan clips so I expect I will be able to just slot the duct inbetween the clips and it'll stay put?

As for the adapter, I guess I could just grab an old 80mm fan, take the middle part/blades out and attach it to the adapter, then put the duct over that! biggrin.gif Yeah! I think I might give that a go actually, for the back side of the radiator without a fan on it!

Don't suppose you have any ideas how I might attach a 120mm fan (on the front of the radiator) to an 80mm hole in the front. I don't think I can use one of those fan adapters at the front because the 80mm fan holes are edged far too close to the side panel...so like I wouldn't be able to close the side panel because the adapter would be sticking out the side!

Thanks for the quick reply biggrin.gif
Nerm
yea you should be able to use 4" duct just fine.

Cut a 120mm hole and drill some new holes, hay presto, 120mm fan hole...

and yeah, you just kinda stretch the duct over the fan (or fan frame if you gut it wink.gif) cos it's PVC with a spiral of steel wire running through it... oh yeah, so duct tape the end so the wire doesn't poke out and short anything... kind of tape it all the way round and fold it over the end... if you see what i'm sayin...

haha, i've ducted my window cos my room in halls has the shittest air circulation ever... haha, i've got a ducted intake window mod! laugh.gif

yeah! B)
markiemrboo
lol

I kinda wanted to try an avoid cutting a hole, I wanted to see if it'd make any difference to my temperature first. I'll try the duct and see what that does!

I read that alot of water in the loop can actually decrease performance and it's best to have as little as possible, so i'm off to try and do that I think!

Thanks again
airman
here's what it should end up lookin like:

markiemrboo
Cool. Looks massive and I don't know if I will be able to fit it in there and manage to get it passed all of my tubing though.

Did this affect case temperatures at all? I think half of my problem is case temperatures. Yesterday I had a case temp of 39C..... dunno how or why that happened but my cpu was at about 43, 4C difference. Today my case temp is 32 and my cpu is 36, 4C again smile.gif

I did manage to stop my air bubble problem this morning though. I just had to fill up the res a little bit more withstupid.gif

dang cooling.
hardnrg
waidaminute mr... you got water cooling? then what the hell are you gonna use a duct on? the northbridge???

maybe you should divert your attentions over to making a shroud for your radiator... much better idea if you've got water cooling...

here's a cheapo way to make one out of fibre-glass resin and some stockings (i kid you not! laugh.gif)
markiemrboo
lol on the other side of the radiator, so it doesn't polute my case temperature and in turn start heating up my radiator? Like I said, my CPU temp seems to be 3/4C higher than my case temps now, and I have 4 case fans, 2x92mm and 2x80mm. So the only thing I can think of that's heating my case up so much is the hot air from the radiator, I guess. Although I am stumped as to why I have that air staying in there with 4 case fans.

It's a BIX, it has its own mini shroud so I doubt that would do much as far as my temperatures are concerned?
