Good Luck.
I'll be sleeving mine in a week or so, so please give me some advice or tips about stuff that you found helpful to do or have near you.

Use a hairdryer on the shrinkwraps that go around the end of the molex connectors.

Probably the ATX wires.. The thick bundle of wires that goes from your psu to your mobo. Sometimes, PSU's have them already sleeved, as might be the case for you.

I use a "heat gun" that I bought at Walmart, it ment for paint stripping but works GREAT on heatshrink, just don't leave the heat on it for too long.

Just make sure you follow Mangar's advice

and use the LOW setting. My heat gun will put out some insane heat on the high setting (enough to severely scorch wood when stripping paint).

good luck with the sleeving. i found it quite a tedious process, but that was perhaps because i didn't have a molex tool. i used a paperclip, it wasn't the best but it worked.

I've sleeved two PSU's and let me tell you that hairdryers don't work at all. You have to use either a heatgun or lighter. I would only use a lighter if your heatshrink is black.

I got me a pin remover, and its on freaking welfare... the molex hole that your supposed to put over the molex pin is way to craping big. so u gotta twist and turn the tool in order to fold down those little flaps.

Just don't make the mistake I did, and put one of the molexes on backwards when you put them back on , I plugged in my DVD drive turned on the computer and smelled something burning!

So, are you guys cutting and resoldering the wires? If not, USE Automotive wire loom. it's ALOT easier than heat shrinking. You know, plastic tubing that goes on wiring under your hood. It comes in colors, is paintable, and can be cut to ANY length. Not to mention making your own rounded IDE cables...

We arent cutting the wires, we are just taking off the molex connector (and any others) and then put the sleeving on and then the heatshrink then putting the connectors back on (hopefully in the right order).

Im kinda in the middle of sleeving mine still with the vantec kit. I have run into some troubles... I cant take off the SATA connectors that come with my antec truepower 380watt PSU, therefore cant fit the sleeving over the connector. WHAT DO I DO???

Tips about the SATA things: Buy some Vampire type sata connections and just replace them, OR take a dremel (or a kitchen knife) and carve the excess plastic off of the sata plug (there is quite a bit) be careful not to cut any wire... once you get down to wire, use black heatshrink over the plug to make it look nice again--but before that, squeeze some sleeving over it. Techflex sleeving expands up to 150%

Draw a picture, but first, offer a sacrifice to the computer Gods.

There is a tool for taking off that connector, but it's like $25.00, I was going to try and make one using maybe a headphone plug and drill out the inside of it. I haven't tested the size yet though, haven't had time.
See if you can move only one wire at a time, as not to get mixed up.
henbenley
Jun 17 2004, 08:47 AM
I would probably tape each wire down on a peice of paper and mark where you started and just go in a row and then just don't get em confused. I'll be starting mine soon when I get the sleeving.

i gota question regarding molex pin removers....
there are the universal , male and female pin removers...
universal is suppositly for both male and female.. they are all 14 bucks at bigfootcomputers ... so im wondreing.. is there a difference between the three
Mangar
Jun 17 2004, 09:59 AM
The universal one has two sizes of the tubular part of the tool, one inside the other.

mine has the two sizes on opposite ends (got it from xoxide) and the universal one will work with both male and female molex's, where as a female remover will only remove female molex's and a male remover will only remove male molex's

Man, there is a link that I posted, and a link that someone else posted IN THIS THREAD to a tutorial/how to on Gruntville that is really decent. Also, there is a link to another post and a link to the tutorial on PimpRig. All the questions are really answered if you just follow the links.
