ok well i want to make my own plexiglass case and should it be a cube/rectangle or i was thinking about somthing diffrent and a pyramid sounded cool, bottom with 4 sides.
any1 have any suggestions? or totally new shape ideas?
thanks, matt

well if it was a pyramid then wouldn't the drives open on a slant
that would be ok i guess
cubes are nice but are kinda overdone now
try some other shapes like 3D pentagon(i know that's not the correct name) lol i dunno

this could be hard to do but a sphere with a base would be pretyt sweet,,you need a prebuilt sphere but u could just mod the rest
FunkyMonkey
Mar 20 2004, 04:32 PM
the problem with the sphere is that the drives will look really fugly if located on the sphere
but it was on the base it would look ok
and also how would u mount stuff like a mobo on a sphere so much space would be wasted
Agallion
Mar 20 2004, 04:38 PM
put like a peice of plexy glass in the middle and mount the board there..like vertically how u would mount it in a prism case

this is indeed pretty hard but you can give it a try with this mod at www.metku.net.
here it is

Personally I like the idea of the pyramid. It would look sweet, you could have a flat panel screen built into the side that would be flush and at just the right angle to view at, meaning the whole comp would be in there.

I think that Priamid is a great idea. I would do it my self but I have no time/money/tallent

yer i think ill do a pyramid....ill get the drives to open flat by making my own front..with a slanted front.
but i really want a slot drive...then it wouldnt really matter to much.
ive been thinking about the mobo cards and i think ill just leave them in the middle of the case and get a extention cord thing to move the plug to the back, then i couold add 10 fans per side

i think putting an LCD on the side (though it may sound cool), is a bad idea. It's not good physically to be looking down on the case, which you would have to do since a pyramid would be slanted up.
As far as a pyramid case goes. Cool idea, but I think it would take up too much room. If you think of the size of a cube...the base would have to be much wider than that of the cubes because with the four sides slanting up into each other, you get less and less space going up, thus, you will need a bigger pyramid to accomodate the necessary parts.

for the size of the base im thinking about 30cm by 30cm, i think thats around 2 feet or the height of a a4 piece of paper. and then40 cm high.
so 30x30x40.
ill make it out of around 1cm think plexiglass? that right thickness?

wont the corner of the graphics card be sticking out? unless ur gona it so that you can run the monior cord inside of the case. same with the speaker wires network card and so on
mattmac24
Mar 21 2004, 04:07 AM
no im gunna sit the mobo right in the center of the case. then cut the L bits of metal with screw holes off and then run a extention cord from the card to a socket in the back.
/ | card on right side with a cord connecting to the left side(wall of case)

i was actually going to design a pyramid, but i really didn't have the time.
here's just a picture I drew up in paint real fast...i didn't wanna launch photoshop.

yer im gunna run the cord into the case, well im gunna run a extentionm cord from thye card to the wall and then the real cord from the wall to the moniter or wateva.
ill try to make a pic now wifout my teacher noticing....

If you want to use the sphere look you could make it a pac-man kinda thing with a hinge in the back side and when you open it up the MOBO sits on the bottom half and your top half would be deep enough to hold cdroms. You could then would be mouth the psu on the base floor and even lights (yellow neon) would fit
the side profile of the case would look like a large D when closed and when open look like an open clam shell. Just and Idea with the flat bottom and back flat it would sit nicely against the wall when open.
mattmac24
Mar 22 2004, 08:20 PM
i think itd be to hard to do all the curves to make a clam.
here is a rushed pic of what i hope itll look like....
matt
EDIT:
also the reason the ps is like that is because i am planning to make my own case for it outta plexiglass as well...or i might just put it in the top little triangle bit.

just an fyi. you don't have to put your harddrive horizontal. Instead of creating a chasis to hold the harddrive horizontal, it would probably be a lot easier to have it parallel with one of the sides of the pyramid.
In fact, i think it would look cooler if you had one harddrive on the left triangular side and another harddrive on the opposite triangular side. Could be a problem with the ide cables but i if you put it high enough at the top maybe you can run one across, or put one closer to the cdrom.
BTW, i like aiRman's idea with the PSU better...having it "notched" out like that.

Here is my diagram, if you mount things slanted it allows for an easier installation and if you upgrade drives its easier as well. Plus you can load CD's at an angle. This case is going to be pretty big though, hope you're ready for it
Let me know if this is clear or not? My paint skills arn't up to par with some of you guys

i dont like the idea of a cut out for anything so im gunna have flat sides.
also i think im gunna get a 1gig drive of mine and take the top off and put it vertical against the side..well horizontal, sorta like URL=http://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/dvdwindowledmod.php]this one from the guides section[/URL]
also i think im gunna add around 10 to 15 fans, in and out plus a big vent.
also i am going to have four cathododes, and spray paintmost things.
plus heaps of leds
this will be my dream case.
only thing is where can i put a handle?
ClayMeow
Mar 22 2004, 09:22 PM
if you want a handle...there's multiple ways you can go about it.
for reference purposes, we'll lable the sides: front, right, back, left. (front being the one facing the user).
One option would be having a simple handle on top of the pyramid extending from the left and right side so that it is horizontal when looking at it from the front.
Option 2. Have two separate handles. One on the left side, and one on the right side. They would be vertical when looking at it from the front.
Option 3. Have a 4-way handle. Extensions from all for sides meeting at a junction above the tip of the pyramid, thus forming a + sign.
As for window....I thought this was going to be acrylic, so completely see-thru. am i wrong?
mattmac24
Mar 23 2004, 11:04 PM
yer it is completly see thuru...i was gunna add a windows for my drive to u can see the disk spinning. also same for cd drive and floppy
i think im gunna go for option 2 with the handles and have them so they fold away and then join togeather

NO NO the main chasis of the pac man look would be heaver cause they would be flat peices for the other round sides you take a mixing bowl (metal) put it in the oven with plexi peice on it and heat up the oven (not extremely heavy plexi) when the oven gets warm enough the plexi will sag and mold to the bowl when the shape is how deep you want it to be remove bowl and all from the oven and the shape should be let to cool at room temp. then do the other half and modify it to what you want it to be.... i think if you exceed 350 degrees f the plexi breaks down and becomes brittle when braught back to room temp
mattmac24
Mar 24 2004, 01:08 PM
kool i didnt no that, but i still like the pyramid shape the best, also my oven is pretty small lol
thanks for that tip though, i m=will use it one day.
also if anyone knows what a g system is because when i start my comp i get:
g System missing
press any key to restart
so im trying to figure out that one first, then ill start on the case...will borrow a good camera and load lots of pics.
thanks, matt

btw, i hope you realize that doing that is EXTREMELY complicated. You MUST be in a completely dust-free environment. One tiny tiny spec of dust falls on the disc and BOOM, no more harddrive.
There's threads here somewhere about how to do it properly, with links to other sites...might wanna try to run a search and read up on them.

something similar still looking for the other one i found before
ClayMeow
Mar 25 2004, 01:58 PM
Frankenstein, first off, that definitely looks cool.
However, that is not a true pyramid. That one is much easier to construct. He wants four triangular sides, which is a little more work.
mattmac24
Mar 25 2004, 06:34 PM
im gunna get a 1gig drive and do it to that, and not connect it up, only power.
and that isnt a true pyramid, like a 3d triangle i think.
also wood isnt cheap is it? im on a cheap budget.
matt,
true pyramid it is i think.
but im not starting until i fix up my comp atm, im gettinga a dos error:
g system missing
press any key to restart
ive asked the local comp shop and they dont no, neither does my uncle(his a auther of books plus a teacher)...both in IT
and there are 0! entries in google for that
plz help

its a gorgeous case IMO, and a very nice rig to boot.

You could just install the drives half an inch back and then stealth them with the plexi glass you *carefully* cut out. So a sphere would be doable with the drive issue. Kind of like a fuller iMac base.
