I read a mod guide that talked about using a uv marker to color the chips on the motherboard so they would glow in UV light. Where can I find one of these markers? Can they be found at local stores like WalMart, or Kmart?

Hi guys, GREAT IDEA!!! I tried this on my rig and highlighters work OK, but not really bright enough… I got one of them gel pens from my sister and took the ink cartage apart and use a brush to paint the stuff that you see in yellow/green. Very nice and easy. It erases easily too so this is not like permanent or anything. So what do you guys think is it a little over the top or does it look nice? I’m planning on doing all the little transistors on my mother board too.

Mine a lot brighter than that, I used one of those liquid filled ones, so the ink is very bright, it almost hurts my eyes soemtimes.

I have a Lan Party mother board wich is allready equiped with several plastic parts that are supposed to glow in the dark under UV light.
I've looked for sources of light that make them glow but the local stores guys go "huh?" when I mention U.V.
maybe i should be asking for black light?
the Lan Party manual just says the plastic is uv-reactive

yes, UV and blacklight are the same thing...however, when it comes to computers, the term that's always used is UV....so i think you need to find a store with a more knowledgeable staff...anyway, instead of asking them for UV specifically, try asking for "case lights" or "Cold Cathode" tubes. Whereever those are located in the store, that's where the UV lights will be, as UV lights are just a variation of them.

I forgot to metion that I live in Bolivia, for those of you who don't know what that is, well it's the second poorest country in the Americas, and the computer stores arroun here look like somthing most of you have only seen in Nationa Geographic. I'm quite sure by now that there is not a single store that sells UV lights for computers arrownd here.
But thanks to your helpfull advice, I've figured I'll try to get some black lights from an audio shop. After all they are very used in night clubs. Of course this ones won't plug to my PSU but I'll find some other way to power them.
Thanks a lot.

Feb 13 2004, 12:33 PM
If you can find a car audio shop that has UV lights for cars, you can hook them up to your PSU in your compy. the yellow wire is the +12v and the red is the +5v, both blacks are ground.
so if you get a 12v UV light from a car audio shop, then you should be ok

It's a Spanish-speaking country, but in these days of real time grammar and spelling check engines, it’s not so hard to communicate in a different language.
Anyway, I seem to have gotten RadioActivated a little confused with the term “audio shop” so I guess there is still a lot for me to learn.
I’ll be visiting some car audio shops tomorrow to see if they have any UV lights for 12 volts DC. If not, I’ll probably shop online (which is hard also because no one ships to Bolivia) or just try to get some e AC-powered black lights.

I'll have to admit that I exaggerated a little bit about the lack of availability of computer parts in my region.
Today I had time for a walk while I was waiting for my car to be washed and I found a store where they actually had a cold cathode light for computers.
[Edit:
I said "a" light becouse there was actully just one of those in the whole store. Added to a transparent case, those were the only interesting things they had.]
The woman at the store couldn't tell if it was a UV or black light or just a neon light, and the package didn't explain much either, so I just bought it and as soon as I get home tonight I will find out what it is.
If I get the glowing effect I've been looking for, I'll soon put my case in the case gallery.

isnt a cathode light UV???
wootas
Feb 19 2004, 04:11 PM
A cathode light is not neccesarily always UV. Cold cathode is just a term for a neon type light that produces less heat. There are several colors of cold cathode available, UV is one of the available "colors" if you could call it that. It is just like a black light, glows sort of purple and makes anything that is UV reactive, or in some cases brightly colored, glow.
