I want to convert my external Hitatchi 500gb hd into Fat32 so I can store movies etc on it and hook it to my xbox 360.

how do i convert from NTFS to FAT32

thanks
Zertz
You will need to format, you can't convert from a file system to another
Andrewr05
  • Open up the command prompt
  • type in: format /FS:FAT32 "drive letter"

This will completely wipe everything on it and format it as fat32.

Oh yeah, that is for Windows XP, I'm not sure if it works the same in Win7.

Alternatively (again not sure about Win7) right clicking on the drive in my computer, clicking on format, selecting FAT32 and hitting "START" should work as well.
I've always liked the command prompt way for a lot of things better.

I haven't tried the command prompt, but that method still is in Windows 7

I assume you're formatting something to be windows/mac/linux compatible. That'd be the only logical explanation for what you're doing tongue.gif

So what you're saying is that you read the title, ignored the OP's post, made a quick and reckless post, which by itself shows that you failed to do something as basic as reading the first post in the thread, and then got caught. Well done thumbs-up.gif

There's a dent in IVI's bullet proof armor if ever I saw one.

I'm by no means bulletproof sir biggrin.gif, I had the laser marker painted right on my forehead and I still ran out the battlefield blindly. I deserve a quick and painless removal (from this thread)

Just remember that you won't be able to store anything larger than 4 GB on the partition. smile.gif

I got to about 90% on the format and it just stopped and said that the drive is basically to large to format to FAT32. The HD is 500 gb,,, will I have to partition it into smaller sections or is there a better way.

What is it with you thinking I'm some rabid Apple fanboy? I own two Apple products, a Macbook and an iPhone. I don't bash on PCs, heck I just invested more money into my PC and I don't tell everybody that Apple is the holy grail of computers and electronics. If an Apple product suits your needs, then so be it. Yes, I get defensive when people ignorantly attack Apple not because I love the company, it's because I hate ignorance. You're mistaking my love for the truth as love for the company.

Ok I figured it out on my own ,,, I used partition manager.

I just wanted to thank you guys for the help and also thank you guys for not turning my thread into some stupid Apple ramble....W T F

cheers

I was just jokin with ya dude, since I think Clay or someone else poked fun since you didn't get an Apple Cinema monitor in another thread.

No I was able to convert the whole thing... and it only took a minute or so.

The dos way was extremely slow and didn't work,, partition magic was complicated and didn't do anything ,,, partition manager worked like a dream. I'm gonna use it to partion my os hard drive when I get my copy of win 7 so that my programs are on a separate partition than my os thus making reinstalling windows a breeze
