Full Version: Buying a new AMD/ATI rig

Ql1max
So, hello again, OCC! smile.gif
I've basicly got a rly old rig, barely capable of running ANY game at all and need to buy a new one.
I'm looking for something:
1. Futureproof (ain't gonna buy a new one for lets say 4 years)
2. Capable of running the new games (yes I'm a gamer)
3. Something that ain't gonna cost more than ~700€ (just about ~1000$)
4. W/ an AMD processor and ATI graphic (AMD/ATI fanboy tongue.gif + the DX11 Capable graphics smile.gif)

So, here's what I'm thinking it would stand up for the job:
Processor: AMD Phenom X4 940 (3,00GHz, 6MB) Box Black Edition - 156€ -> 231$
Motherboard: Don't rly know, mpoving towards the ASUS M4A78 PRO - AMD 780G Chipset - 83€ -> 123$
Memory/RAM: Corsair XMS2 4GB 1066MHz CL5 Kit - 72€ -> 106$
Graphics: MSI Radeon HD5850 1024MB (It says "Display port".. any1 know what does it mean? biggrin.gif) - 227€ ->335$
Case: NZXT M59 (Basic, good looking, cheap..smile.gif) - 70€ -> 103$
PSU: Xilence Red Wing Edition 580W 120mm (OK, OK, I admit, it's a random PSU.. I don't rly know anything about PSUs, thats why I want u to tell me wich one would stand up to the job.. tongue.gif) - 66€ -> 97$
Total: 673 € -> 996$
I've already got the disk, DVD ROMs and all the other stuff.. smile.gif
So, if the budget is 700€, I still got 30€ to spend, so go on and tell me how or where to spend it smile.gif
All suggestions, changes, opinions, critics and everything else is very welcome!

Thank you very much OCC, I love you!
P.S.: Sorry if there are mistake in my writing, I'm from Slovenia and my English is not so very good xD

That looks like a pretty solid rig, but just a few personal suggestions:

I would not go AM2+ anymore, especially with DDR2 prices far above what they were a few months ago. Now DDR2 and DDR3 prices are pretty much equal (at least here in the US). That said, I see no real reason to go AM2+ as there is no longer a DDR2 price incentive. I suggest going AM3, that is, Phenom II X4 955, and respective AM3 mobo and DDR3 memory. The 955 is still a Black Edition, it's only ~$10 more here in the US than the 940 (@ newegg) and its a newer socket, which will give you "futureproofing" relative upgradability and a performance boost over the older AM2+.

I don't know what prices are over in Slovenia (or where you got the prices you listed from.. $231 for a 940! yikes!) but I would check out an AM3 set up smile.gif

Also, I would check out OCC's Recommended Power Supply List thread, there's plenty of good PSU's to choose from, but a decent 650W should be able to power that rig just fine and give some room for upgrades.
ShallowBay
i would replace the 940 with this
and for a motherboard, this is a great option.
Heres some ddr3 ram at a good price/speed ratio and cheaper than the ddr2 you picked out initially.

I also vote for the 955, get a 790 chipset board (your choice from the base 790X, 790GX for integrated, or the 790FX for 16x/16x crossfiring, which might only be necessary for two 5870s), and make sure to get ddr3 with 1600mhz and timings as low as you can (generall around 7-7-7-20).

OK, ty for replies smile.gif
So, went searching again and thats what i found:

RAM:
There are a few cohoices:
Corsair XMS3 4GB 1600MHz CL9 i5 Kit
Kingston HyperX 4GB 1800MHz CL8 Kit
OCZ Platinum Edition 4GB 1333MHz CL7 Kit
Patriot Viper Extreme nVidia 4GB 1333MHz CL7 Kit
They all cost from 90 to 100€, which is 20/30€ more than DDR2.. makes me kinda worry :S

Processor:
2 Choices again:
AMD Phenom™ II X4 945 (3,00GHz, 8MB) Costing the same as the 940
or
AMD Phenom™ II X4 955 (3,20GHz, 8MB) Black Edition costing 10€ more than 945/940
I dont rly know.. but I'll ask anyways.. I see the only difference between those 2 is that the 955 is BE.. what does that mean anyways? (n00b speaking)

Mobo:
Does it really have to be a 790 chipset? I hear the 785G's are pretty good too..
Here are the choices:
790 Chipset:
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO - AMD 790X Chipset
785G Chipset:
ASUS M4A785T-M
MSI 785GM-E51
Sapphire PURE PI-AM3RS785G
+I see they all have intergrated HD4200 graphic... Could I hybrid xf my 5850 wtih the 4200

As for the PSU:
How strong PSU do i need anyways? Would a 550W be enough?

Ty again for replies wink.gif

I don't think you could hybrid them.

The 945 is a 940 with it's balls removed (non black edition, and labeled as AM3) though if you don't mind overclocking intel style or aren't overclocking I guess it wouldn't matter. The 955 will overclock easier since you are just flipping switches.

How much cheaper would a set of 1066mhz 5-5-5-15 sticks cost and a ddr2 version of whatever motherboard you are fancying?? None of those ddr3 sticks really called out to me, the 1800mhz would probably be the best of all of them.

black edition cpus feature unlocked multiplier ..means easy overclocking
i think you can not run hybrid graphics with 4200 , if you want it you must use 4670 and lower ..and it is not make a hill of a difference
i think it will be ok but 600-650 will be better ..and get a high quality psu some thing like ocz , gigabyte , HEC , asus ...etc
if you can get 955 it will be better 945 is good too but if you want to overclock like crazy i think 955 will give you the best result
and you can do it easily ..wink.gif good luck nice build
by the way i like the case i always recommend it ..and lexa s too ..good luck

As for the OCing, I won't be ocing much.. maybe to 3.4GHz MAX! tongue.gif
So, the 1066MHz CL5 RAMs are:
OCZ Platinum Edition 4GB 1000MHz CL5 Kit for 65€
or
Corsair XMS2 4GB 1066MHz CL5 Kit for 72€

But the mobo.. U mean a AM3 mobo with DDR2 support?
What about running an AM3 CPU on a AM2+ mobo? Does ti slow the CPU down?
I could do 955 + AM2+mobo +DDR2 RAMs w/o spending too much.. howld that do?

i think 945 will do ..955 too ..pick any one

there is not much difference , you will not notice it too , Only benchmarks can show the difference and it will not be much like 55 and 54
no it will not slow the cpu down it was made to run on it but i think go with AM3 for future proof and ddr3 ..i noticed that ddr3=ddr2 in price
there are some good low price ddr3 sticks ..wink.gif

Yeah you could run that, and if you are going to run AM2+ I'd just get the 940 (since it's cheaper).
How much were the 1800mhz sticks??

any way i agree with ya , if you are going with AM2+ get 945-940 ..but i prefer AM3 because of ddr3 ..

OK, but 1 more question.. I've red some posts on other forums and people say that DDR3 and DDR2 are the same in preformance, tho, DDR2 is 20€ cheaper than DDR3 here in Slovenia.. :/
As for 1800MHz sticks.. there is a Kingston CL8 1800 Kit for 100€

all the ddr3 kits you posted up will perform worse than the DDR2 except for the 1800mhz CL8 ones. How much cheaper is it to get a ddr2 version of the motherboard you like??
