Newbie David here. I've been using a computer for past 20 years. Have one at home that is almost 8 years old and am seriously considering buying the parts and building a system myself.
I could have my local computer store put together a system but I would end up paying extra for the parts and $50.00 for the labor.
I'm a little scared about ordering parts, what if the mb doesn't work, can I return it. What are good sites to buy from? Are there any sites that test the CPU & MB before they are shipped to make sure they work?
I'm going to leave a post in the build your own section of this forum, hope you will take time to look at it and give suggestios - I hope this is a fun site!! Tks - David

Most people shop at newegg.com. I've ordered many parts from them and have sent in a few DOA ones back and not once was it more trouble than it had to be. they have great customer service. oh and WELCOME TO OCC

Welcome to OCC David...

you have some very valid questions so lets take a crack at those...

building a PC yourself can be fun but can also be problematic as you pointed out...yes you can get bad parts and things happen but yes if they are bad they can be replaced...most of us get our stuff at places like Newegg.com and various other places...

the added cost you pay locally to have a PC shop build you a PC is they handle the warranty for you and you dont have to deal with the hassle should you have a problem with something...they do this for you..but as an added cost...

if you feel confident on doing a build then by all means build one...you'll be cheaper this way and the helpfull people here can guide you on what you need or can help you should problem arise...

there are all kinds of guide on building your own pc and I would encourage you to seek out and read some of these to get you better acquainted with things should a problem arise you'll be better prepared...

thats exactly how I got started 10 years ago...I had PCs back years ago (commodore 64) and then I didnt touch one for like 10 years (girls smile.gif) and then I bought a refurb with a AMD 500mhz cpu that was pretty top of the line and this was before the 1ghz cpu came out...

I built the next one but I did alot of reading and learning and now I build them all the time as a 2nd business...
