Does anyone know if it is possible to fashion an external dvd drive, from the sata --> usb interface from an external hard drive enclosure and a dvd drive?

I know the drive wont find inside, but will the interface still work with an optical drive instead of a hard drive?

I'm not so sure, the USB aspect of it mounts it as a removable drive right?

If the device is "smart" enough then I suppose it could differentiate between a HDD and an ODD but I'm not really sure.

No, it comes up as a permanent hard drive in the top row. Just wondering if anyone had heard of it being done because i couldn't find anything useful on google.

USB drive kits are ~$20. I would just do that if you needed to use a drive this way. It will come in handy often.

I don't see why it shouldn't work...I'd say try it, if it doesn't work, you're just out a little time for your efforts. Why not just use eSATA and a molex/SATA power pass through? SATA is plug and play smile.gif

Heh did this with parts from an hdd enclosure once. Was EIDE but I could plug in any EIDE DVD drive and it would work just like the removable harddrive. I don't see why this wouldn't work with sata also.
