Full Version: Will This Psu Be Enough?

Hey everyone,
Im getting a new rig today, and i'm not sure if the PSU will hold the system.
Im low on budget, so i cant really afford anything better, but i sure wanna know if the PSU won't decide to leave this world, and take the GPU with it.
Here's my plan:

Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 2.53Ghz Penryn BOX

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L

Raidmax O2 2x120mm + 23cm Led Side Fan Black

FSP Basic SI 450W ATX450-PNR 120mm + Satax3 PCI-E P.PFC

G.Skill 4GB DDR2-800 DualKit (2x2GB) CL5-5-5-15 4GBPQ

Western Digital 320Gb 16MB AAKS

Sapphire Radeon 4850 512MB DDR3 Retail

LG GH20NS DVD-RW x20 Dual Layer Sata Black

Im planning to OC the E7200 to about 3.4-3.6Ghz. Do you think that this cheap PSU will hold the system? i don't have the spare cash for a CorsairVX450 or something like that.

Maybe, but i wouldn't attempt it!

Why? I mean, it's FSP after all, and it's far from the cheapest 450W PSU out there. It's close to the Blue Storm's price, and the BS 400w costs that much only because of the Retail package and the nice colour.
Rokkaholik
Compare how much 12v your video card will need under load and then see what the actual output of the 12v on the power supply is. Personally, I'd make sure there's more than one 12v rail, and I'd also look for something over 500w just to play it safe.
PeterStoba
The amps on the 12v rail may only be JUST enough, not sure withot a model number

Raphsody... What is your budget limit may I ask? Add up the cost of the other parts and see what you have left over to spend on a Power Supply. maybe someone here can find you something that may be a better fit/value. Also, check the Parts For Sale section here on the site. Someone may have something...

I'd love to, but I kinda live in Israel. Our prices here are different from NewEgg's and sites alike. Still, i can show you the website of the store im buying from:
http://tms.co.il/cat/136
It's the PSU page, use the page numbers in the end of the page to move to pages 2,3 etc.
The price limit is 300 Nis. My PSU costs 209. The workers there told me that the 209 will suite me fine, but i don't really trust them.
I can only think of "Thermaltake 450W TR2 RX" for 279, instead of that cheap FSP. But they said i should stay with the FSP.

Thanks.
PeterStoba
So anything with a 300 next to it, you can buy?

http://tms.co.il/product/3900 would be better

I thought of that one too.
I can buy anything UP TO 300, meaning 300 is my black limit (obviously black limit comes after the red one biggrin.gif)

EDIT:
PROBLEM: That PSU has the same efficiency as the FSP one. (70%), do you still think i should go for it?
Rokkaholik
The Thermaltake 450W TR2 RX only has 14v and 15v rails on it... It's good for a regular machine, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone who'll need more power for a Video Card

Did you possibly check Evilbay?

I just snagged up an OCZ 500w last week that sports a 28v rail and it plenty to power the 8800GT I put in a friends PC.

Used may be your better option to find something with more oomph for you. Make sure you look for something name brand. The generic ones have very minimal life to them. They'll work for a few months and crap out.
Raphsody
isn't FSP a brand name?
the funny thing is that i can't find any info on the PSU i was about to buy in FSP's website. Can someone try and help me? im looking for like 20 minutes now.
PeterStoba
Apparently it has 18a on each of it's 2 12v rails

Ummm.. I don't know that much about PSUs, but 18A on each of it's 2 12v rails sounds like a good thing to me.

Raphsody, that PSU should work just fine! As I think jammin put it the other day:
QUOTE
PSUs are probably the one most overbought component in computers.

Forton definitely makes good PSUs and the only other 'upgrade' from that 450W I can find on the list would be the Enermax 400W, but that's like 350 already. The Thermaltake is not something you should consider, as Thermaltake PSUs tend to be crap, except the Toughpower series, so just get the 450W Forton and you should be fine smile.gif

[Edit] Scratch all of what I said! That PSU only has passive PFC! I'd grab the Forton Blue Storm 400W instead!

Okay, I got the cash i was missing for the VX450 Corsair.
It's almost twice more expensive than the FSP 450W, and the salesman there told me that if i don't care not have a brand in my case, or need a 5years warranty instead of the 1 year one, i shouldn't waste the money.

What do you think? Tell me why should I, or should not, go for the VX450 instead of the FSP 450W.
The FSP has 2 12v rails of 18A each, but only Passive PFC.
I believe you guys are familiar with the 450 VX, so no details/specs needed.
Raphsody
Done.
No more FSP 450W. Changed it to VX450.
damian
you shouldn't have. you would of saved a lot of money sad.gif
EDIT: wait which one were you planning on buying?

Saved a lot of money to get a PSU that was crap.... yea, good deal!
damian
yah thats why i made the edit i thought he was talking about the Blue Storm power supply.
You know im serious when it comes to power supplies tongue.gif
Puck
Good choice, even though the FSP is a good PSU, the VX450 is a much better choice for a more modern single card rig.

You never want to run something too close to its rated max, and the extra headroom of the VX450 will be at least piece of mind.
xly15
VX450 FTW. Corsair is a very good brand. You should have no troubles. I'm using a VX550 and I love it.

Xly15
damian
^i agree i love my VX550w has to be one of Corsair's best model no doubt.
ps. i can barely read your sig xly sad.gif
Thewacokid
I would have gone with the FSP, but meh.
damian
withstupid.gif yeah cuz Bluestorm sounds way cooler the VX tongue.gif

EDIT: But still that's a great power supply certainly better the the FSP.
Good Luck
Thewacokid
I was talking about the regular 450 watt FSP. I've used the 350, 400, and 450 watt models in all sorts of rigs and I've never had trouble with a single one.
Raphsody
Damn it guys, where were you before i changed to 450VX?...
At least its 5 yrs warranty instead of 1.
Thewacokid
Well the 450VX is a better PSU for sure. It's more efficient by far, for starters.

I just don't think I'd have spent the extra money for a rig like yours.
Great_Gig
I think the VX450 is a great choice, as you can see from my sig I like Corsair PSU's - 5 year warranty, silent running until you push them hard and very efficient. I think you will be happy with that. I know it's an inexact science using power calculators and the only sure way is to fire up a system and test it at the wall, but that sort of system under load shouldn't pull more than around 250W, so you should be fine smile.gif
