Hi, Im building a computer this summer, and was just curious what size of PSU I should get.
So far my build is

Thermaltake Armor + bws6000 (purchased)

Intel Q6600 Processor

Chiltec CPU Fan

Gtx http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gore-Tex 280 or 9800GX2

XFX Nvidia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia 790i Ultra Motherboard

And Im deciding between which DDR3 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR3_SDRAM Ram to get.
I know its expensive etc..
but i was looking at

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicat [...] CatId=3361

Or

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicat [...] CatId=3361

Which is better?

But Anyways my MAIN question is what wattage should I get and how do i know its appropriate ammount
Ive been told that 1000w is overkill and just to get 750 but then others have said that 750 is not enough and to get 900+ etc.. etc..
I would prefer to buy a modular power supply
and I was looking at the
OCZ 900W Modular Power supply
Will that do the trick?
Much thanks to all the help. tongue.gif

Firstly, sort your links out. laugh.gif (i.e. Wikipedia is kind of irrelevant, link to the products you are actually looking at.. not Gore-Tex).

I can't see what PSUs you are looking at either.

Apart from that it depends whether you are planning on sticking a couple of cards in SLi or not.
Two GTX 280s are going to be reasonably power hungry, but a decent 750W PSU would likely still handle them.
If you're not planning on two cards then 750W is plenty and you could get away with less.

what the heck!!
I didnt even put those in their LOL
I have no idea where those links came from
anyways
I was looking at the OCZ 900w Modular PSU
I want a modular psu more than anything

So are you sticking with one card or planning on two?

If modular is a priority it shouldn't be too hard to whip up a list of a few for consideration. smile.gif

Awesome alist would be great!
Im still not sure for the time being if im goign to start off with one or two gpu's
im either going to get 1-2 9800gx2's
or just 1 gtx 280 when the price comes down, i can wait.
No im not going to get the 4870 lol.

But in the future I will deffinetly see myself upgrading to two gpu's
so yes SLI will be used.

Prices on the GTX are already under $500 in certain cases.

Both the GX2 and GTX use a 6-pin and 8-pin connector, so you're going to need something with at least those on it.

Note that having modular cabling as a requirement means I'll have to leave some very good options off this list:

Antec True Power Quattro 850W - $149.99
Some have some reservations about the DC output quality, but I think those are minor niggles at best. The price is low for what you are getting.

Zalman ZM850-HP - $174.99
Another Enhance built PSU, like the above, but with a different fan configuration. Haven't seen it thoroughly tested anywhere yet, but should be very solid.

Xigmatek 750W and 850W - $139.99 and $189.99
Consider these wild card entries as I haven't seen them pushed in testing anywhere. They are CWT builds, and should therefore be similar to others that share the same platform (such as the Thermaltake Toughpower).

Seasonic M12 700W - $169.99
Apparently has 4 x 6-pin and 1 x 6+2pin connector, so you'd be missing an 8-pin connector for SLi, which could be made up with an adaptor.

Enermax Modu82+ 625W - $189.99
I'd be a little concerned running SLI on it, even though it has the necessary connectors. Definitely a good PSU just maybe not powerful enough.

Silverstone Decathlon 800W - $229.99
I'm not completely up together with Silverstone PSUs at the moment, but their higher rated supplies are built on server platforms and this has a nice healthy single rail and is completely modular.

You may be able to find better prices, I'm just using newegg for simplicity.

There is potential for pushing into higher rated supplies such as the Corsair HX-1000, which is very good. Don't know if you can justify it though.

Restricting yourself to modular does leave out some other notable PSUs such as the PCP&C 750 or the Corsair TX 750.

Big fan of thermaltake

The only reason I didn't list the Thermaltake is that price. If you can get it for quite a bit less then it might be a good deal.
If you're going to spend $260 though, you may as well stretch to the Corsair HX-1000 for $280 (or $260 after rebate).
