Full Version: So I bought an Antec 900 to drown my sorrows :D

They are ok. More functional that stylish. 7/10. I'm just a clean freak when it comes to cases.
I own 2 antec towers here. biggrin.gif  Fits 2900's/GTX's so I'm happy.
Will be drilling in some 92's into the older black one of mine, hopefully tonight.
soundx98
I appreciate your thoughts:)

They are starting to grow on me already.

I Kinda like the "Industrial" style.
Looking functional is GOOD. biggrin.gif
(As opposed to case stickers on your forehead)

They got a nice low profile too.

They probably will look a little "spiffier" when the SR-1 is mounted on the "radoBase" wink.gif
radodrill
Have you decided what's going to join your XFX 8800GT and G-Skill DDR2-800 in the SR-1?
soundx98
rado, rado, rado - you're just lookin' at Candy and Jasmine again biggrin.gif

(doctorphillipjnerdlingeresq)
The SkyHawk 620 PSU will be upgraded to a Corsair HX-620 with those nice flexible black modular cables.
Great review here and the cables lengths are listed on Page 3.
http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/articl...50aHVzaWFzdA==

The XFX 7900GT is sold, and we'll be using the XFX 8800GT.
(I'm still on the 8800GT stock cooling but intend to upgrade that as well)

The reviews on the GSkill F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ look fantastic and I hope I get as lucky as other users.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=135578

Going with the DFI LT LP P35 T2R.
I love the looks and got a great price on it!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136039

Not sure what processor but I really hope I can wait for the E8400 (3.0GHz 45nm)

Pre-ordered ($5 downstroke) the E8400 from TankGuys a couple of hours ago. smile.gif
radodrill
Forgot about the HX-620 and the DFI P35; lets hope you get the E8400 (and the rest of it) soon :dog:

Well they are a highlight of this thread wink.gif

Don't know about the handles. I think the billet handles from MNPCtech would match the shape of the 900 better:

http://www.mnpctech.com/MnpctechBillethandle.html

Have Bill work you up a deal and get them powder-coated or something.

Well the external shape really matches the front profile of the case; but it'd have to be black to go with the case

That's what I mean - powder-coated black biggrin.gif

Already checked.
$50 for the handles and $15 for the powder coating = $65

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get 'em anodized? Same result..

I am getting some pretty positive feedback from some people on the handles.

Perhaps the feel of handles is best determined by those that use them. smile.gif

I did want something:
a) that looked Industrial/Commercial/Professional Strength
cool.gif had a very low profile
c) were "rounded' so they wouldn't be cutting into things.
d) they're really not as much for "lifting" as for "tipping",
the case is starting to get pretty heavy as we keep adding gear, nice to have something solid to grab onto.
e) unique, I've never seen an Antec 900 with handles before.
("Eww Marge look at that, an Antec 900 with handles
Mmmm, Handles)

The mirror window does make the handles blend into the case more.
I've got the case sitting on the dining room table.
I think I walk by it 50 times a day.
The handles are on it but not permanently secured.
Usually if I still like something after two weeks it's a keeper.

I'm still working out how to mount them and reinforce the top section.
I could see the plastic top being completely ripped off if the handles weren't secured through the steel top.
Course the 200mm fan isn't gonna make the fit easy for handles.

Good day so far, managed to find the screws I needed for the Zalman 9700 LED and the missing DFI cable that connects to the Bernstein Audio Module.
Got a couple of plaques ordered as well.

And I really appreciate the input from everyone.
('cept you wackos that are really fugged up in da haid) biggrin.gif

(prosser13;3215529)
Any chance of some pictures with the top off and the handles where they are on the plastic top? ohmy.gif

If I'm being greedy feel free to set radodrill on me smile.gif

LOL, Are you looking for something shot straight down from above the fan?
And the handles placed where I think they are gonna go?

Yes, I will be taking the top off (again) but I'm doing a slow "un-build" right now.
Seeing where things looked "great" and things that were just "OK".
(Lot of stuff to pull out of this sucker, and I still need to decide what to monitor with the Dallas One-wire probes)
I'll be in Chicago next week so you'll need to bear with me a bit.

And I promise to send some wallet-size "nekid" rig photos to you and that other perv, Run N. Gun biggrin.gif

I wouldn't worry about radodrill.
Seems he threw his back out in a "pleasekillme" Throwing Contest trying to impress the girls.
As soon as he heals a little he'll be starting the "radoBase" section of the SR-1.
(you got seatbelts on that chair don't ya?)

The Antec Nine Hundred is an amazing piece of work.

Zoltan is everywhere mang.

(Zoltan)
Zoltan: We'll travel through space... with cool aliens who LIKE us!

[as Super Hot Giant Alien passes overhead, a Father and Son see up her skirt]

Don't forget the rest of the Zoltan cult; especially Jeff tongue.gif

Zarnoff: [introducing the Zoltan cult] My name is Zarnoff. This is Zabu, Zellnor, Zelbor, Zelmina, and, uh, Jeff.
Jeff: Hey.
soundx98
Some pics of the underside of the top.
They bolts will clear the fan smile.gif
Yellow is where it looks like the bolts need to go sad.gif

But now if I can find the correct size "posts" (fat ones) to put the bolts that secure the handles/case top/"posts"/steel top of case through.
I may not even need those plastic "tabs" there smile.gif

Some more shots (from the top) as I look at positioning.

Also shot the case/handles with the AC Ryan AcrylMirror Panel in place.

Kinda reminds me of the "Gattling Gun" from Furutremark smile.gif

I think they blend well into the "Industrial" look.
----------------------------------------------

I'd also like your opinions on the Corsair PSU.
It has a "Corsair 620" decal on either side.
(I hate the red)

Of course it will be flipped over in the SR-1 (fan up) and the "Corsair 620" decal is upside down.
Kinda makes it look like you were high or a tard when you assembled it. Or Both.

So I tried it with a little of the "Chrome Aluminum" vinyl from MNPCTech that I used on the drive cage area.
Sort of an accent.

other possibilities I can think of are;
a) remove red Corsair decal carefully and replace it correct orientation (ie, non-tard)
cool.gif Use new roll of "CarbonFibre" vinyl from MNPCTech in the decal area (or all) of the PSU.
c) Remove the "Corsair 620" decal completely (totally black side, nekid)

Not sure how to tackle the Decal on the fan hub.
Unit has NOT been opened (or tested) and I'd hate to void another warranty.
--------------------------------------------------

Been doing a lot of reading about the DFI mobo.
Always exciting to use a DFI motherboard.
They seem to "fly" or "fail" biggrin.gif
What else can I say
I'll either be "high-fivin" or "cryin"

That's an Enzotech aftermarket cooler
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/5520/vid...l?tl=g40c16s229

Board came with it and a spare Bios chip (never leave home without it).

Man, I can't wait to get that E8400 and put this sucka together. smile.gif
"And then?"
Overclock the mofo
"And then?"
Assemble the case
"And then?"
Mount it on the "radoBase"
"And then?"
"And then?"
"And then?"
"And then?"

So any thoughts? comments? suggestions?
sparkyftw
looking nice.

and something you said inspired me a little bit
soundx98
"And Then?" smile.gif
soundx98
(RnG)
handles are secured with "the fat metal posts/sleeves that you mentioned?"
I think we're still on the same page with that approach.
Screw through the posts/sleeves to the handles through the plastic, from under the metal top.

werd biggrin.gif

be zactly where I am comin from my fine brutha.
Yes, bracing of some type is probably a very good idea (but again, I'm a "tipper" not a "lifter")
Lotta work cutting metal.
I am really have no shop area here at Casa Del Crazy Carl.
And they probably won't plow the La Quinta parking lot until the spring smile.gif

hmm, wonder if I know anyone with the proper tools to cut a coupla holes in a steel "plate" for me.
The Steel shouldn't need to be too thick.
Just a 1" wide plate the width of the chassis interior with the holes in the correct position.
couple of the suckers.

DFI mobo:
Just found this and it looks ohsofrikken kewl.
An equally appreciated function is the simplified "Clear CMOS" function.
To clear the CMOS, simply press both the EZ Power and the EZ Restart button at the same time for about four seconds.
Then release the power button first, then the reset button.
This function will hopefully also work with the power on and reset buttons on the chassis.

Bet I've cleared the CMOS (needing to remove battery and move jumper) hundreds of times smile.gif
I love the on-board Power and Reset switches on the LanParty boards.
I always test the setup "out of the case" first.

The SATA cables look nice.
Decent thickness, pliable and a nice UV.
I'm thinking the blue and green interior will compliment the black and silver exterior.

So any ideals on the fan hub decal?
radodrill
Here's an idea for mounting the handles;

1) remove the plastic studs in the highlighted areas
2) drill holes for the handles into the plastic top and case for the handles
3) get metal plates (maybe 25mmx200mm) and drill holes to match screwholes for the handle (3 per handle = 6 total)
4) install handles with all-thread; namely: Handle -> plastic top -> metal plate -> double-nut -> space -> double-nut -> metal plate -> case -> metal plate -> double-nut (can also use nylock nuts instead of the double-nuts)
ReelFiles
Here's my idea on the decal: screw the warranty open it up and pull it off.

Or.. turn the PSU on and color the spinning fan with a black marker or one of those liquid silver pens.

Shibby!!
schoolslave
Nice to see that my old 620W has found a new cozy home. smile.gif

For the decal on the fan, couldn't you just put a little circle of the chrome on the fan grill?
t_ski
I like the idear of carbon fiber film all over the PSU, or the brushed chrome film.

Here's an x-sectional view of my thoughts on mounting the handles

soundx98
Gotta cousin with a trophy shop.
Figured since we gave it a "name" (SR-1) it could use a plaque.
(Plus this project seems to be taking MUCH longer than I anticipated)
Figured one on the top and one in the rear.
Just couldn't make up my mind so I had two different styles done.

Victoria Font

Roman Italic Font

Roman Italic on Top and Victoria on Bottom

Any thoughts or am I being a little too gay/gaye/gai?

P.S. radodrill thinks the "radodrill" should be bigger biggrin.gif
sparkyftw
haha thats awesome. I think all case mods should have one. Maybe a plaque to hang on a wall.

I read above you need some help drilling some metal. I have access to a mill if you are still local.

I started ANOTHER case today. This one is just going to house my old system, but it definatly needs some color.
radodrill
I think I prefer the first one with the script font and rounded corners.

Best cleaning product ever imo. I would've been happy to get a bottle of it from mom for the holidays.

I think I prefer the first one with the script font and rounded corners.

Second.
t_ski
I think now that the label is gone, you need to fill it in with the brushed-chrome tape or something. Just a thought...
snugglealufacus
Exceuse my horrible atristic abilities, but I personally would have kept the red and just made something else in the case red (or rather I would prefer black/dark red instead of black/chrome because my emo side comes out when I build computers [everyone has one lol]). This case is byfar the sexiest thing I have ever seen!

Newegg has this case for $120 with free shipping and a $40 rebate brings it down to 80. Should I? And sorry for going off topic, but I'm sure it is louder than my good 'ol P180, eh? Might buy this as my gift to myself and just hope for watercooling when birthday comes around biggrin.gif

(randodrill)
I think I prefer the first one with the script font and rounded corners.

I Third that.
soundx98
Temperature outside of Casa Del Crazy Carl is minus 16 degrees at 6AM.
can you say "shrinkage"?
------------------------
hmmm, seems like everyone likes the Victoria script (bottom) better than the Roman Italic (top)

@his sparkyFTWness - Thanks Dan, I may take you up on that. Very kind smile.gif
rado's plan for the handles makes sense but I am not sure I will use them until I see the SR-1 on the "radoBase".
I am concerned that these handles (or any handles) MAY distract from the "radoBase".

Mac - when is your birthday? I may send a little "goo-gone" to ya.
P.S. - It is OK to remove the DIY Fantasy Football link from your sig now. smile.gif
I got the crap kicked out of me in FFL, no need to rub it in.

t_ski - I go back and forth and forth and back on that every time I look at it.
I like the "nekid black Industrial" look but may change my mind once it all gets put back together.
fortunately it's something I can do at any time in the future.
(maybe a "t_ski for President" sticker or something)

snugglealufacus (I always wondered, is that last "s" in "snugglealufacus" silent, like in Illinois?) biggrin.gif
The case insides will be blue (fans) , green UV (DFI LP P35 T2R), and black.
The only other thing in the case that is Red is the memory heatspreaders.
Again, a "we'll see" for now smile.gif

I find the case to be quiet, but any case with all those holes will let noise out.
The fans are 3 speed and large so you'll probably hear the smaller, higher RPM, fans over them.
It really is not that large of a case so I'm doubtful that all the Water Cooling stuff would fit in nicely.
But after seeing the great job that mknwatt did on his CM690 http://www.diy-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=81927 I guess it's a matter of planning and patience.

It's always nice to have a spare case around.
Just in case one of the cases doesn't match your shoes or handbag smile.gif
catkicker
Around -13 here in the Dubuque Iowa area. So MBM5/matrix orbital wizard,
are you going to be able to setup MBM5 for the new DFI board? By the way my search for a MX6 series has been unsuccessful. I did pick up a Matrix Orbital MX432 4 Line for $45.00 shipped. I'm going to mount it inside the case. You will be able to look through the side panel and see the display.
soundx98
Just got back in town so if yo are ever serious about driving up (a little less than 320 miles, about 5 hours unless you overclock the car) Casa Del Crazy Carl does have a spare bedroom (and PC). smile.gif

Well both Praz and FreeCableGuy tell me they have not been able to get it to work.
another challenge for the Oldfaht smile.gif
If not, I am pretty sure I can get the "events" working for the "radoBase".

MX432 for $45. Way kewl cat!
Inside the case will be excellent.
scopEDog used a 2 line in his "BarCode" case mod.
(like one of my favorite mods ever)

I bet yours will look terrific.

Please keep me posted on your progress.

I've got another vote for the "Victoria" font with the rounded corners. Those plaques are cool, what a good idea! I've never seen anyone use one of those before with a case mod.

I think you're gonna have enough color going on in there with the new MB - you don't need to add another one! (red)

That copper cooler is sweet! Expensive, at least at Frozen, but then again it's a forged part. I bet one of those would look nice on the NB of my TF560 in place of the gold Zalman I'm using right now!
s1ick
Yer i tend to leave the big threads until i know i have time to sit down and read through them. hence the lack of comment until now smile.gif but as i said earlier very nice.

I always get put of the cases that have that gray internal look its rubbish!
I'd like a 900 but just don't have the time to do spraying and that kinda stuff.
soundx98
Hey thanks blooz smile.gif

couldn't wait for an E8500 processor any longer.
picked up an BX80570E8400 Q746A489 at Mpls MicroCenter for $189.95 and used the $25 Gift card I had as well.
About 1/2 what the E8500 would have cost me and I really didn't have the extra $150 anyway smile.gif

The LT LP is used and I believe it has the 9/13 bios on it (and I have a spare bios chip also 9/13)
Doubt if I'll get a chance to do my 1st Intel build until Saturday.
I hoping it at least boots so I can flash the 0109 Bios.

Intel, please be gentle with me biggrin.gif

LOL
I should be so lucky as to have another 775. rolleyes.gif
Nah, and I bet it gets ugly for a while.

Tmod/Loggan 10.3.9 CD is out and it has the beta 0109 I need on it.
Just gotta hope for the best (and pray)

Still weirded out by the lack of pins smile.gif
But the Zalman 9700 mounted with relative ease.
I'd love to fire it up right now, but I am afraid if it didn't boot I would be worthless at work tomorrow.
If it did boot I know I wouldn't go in to work biggrin.gif

woo-hoo!
Got it to boot after a couple of C1's (turned off PSU and did a 30 second CMOS jumper clear - no BATTERY PULL used).
But it wouldn't let me into the Bios so I disconnected the HDD forcing the CD Rom to boot.
I managed to flash the 109 with the Tmod/Loggan Bios CD. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif
(Board was on the 10/05 Bios originally)
Once flashed I was able to enter the 0109 Bios
Out of the case on a table with CPU at 25 (Zalman 9700), PWM at 46 and Chipset at 39 in the bios at Defaults.
Gonna check around in the Bios and then connect an HDD.

Pretty happy right now, just hope I don't dork anything.

mknwatt - jebus your mod on that CM690 is wicked!
LOL, you and t_ski are a real pair smile.gif

Glad to here you "got it up" and running. I have an X38 on my why, so I may be racing you for some high clocks soon biggrin.gif

Is there a blank template for the Bios someone can link to?
What is the preferred program for stability testing? Orthos? Prime95v255?
Prime 95 under processes (CPU time) shows twice the real elapsed time.
Cause of the Dual cores I would imagine.
Custom 800MB for each 1G stick?

Appears to me that the latest Everest versions show the most accurate and complete temp/voltage information (and it corresponds with CoreTemp 0.96.1.)

Air-Cooled (you can call me a pansy) with the Zalman 9700 I have Core 1 running about 10 degrees hotter than Core 2.
Remount HSF or is this common to have?

Definitely all about the GTLs for me (60, 59, 60 NB) and tRFC at 36 (40 wasn't stable for me). 5-5-5-15 and almost everything else on AUTO.

4400MHz with CPU-z validation
http://premium1.uploadit.org/soundx98//CPUZ4400Verified.JPG

4300MHz runs great but Core 1 craps out after an hour (heat probably) while Core 2 keeps chugging along for hours (aborted it after 4/8)
http://premium1.uploadit.org/soundx98//4300-Detail.JPG

Super Pi at 11 secs
http://premium1.uploadit.org/soundx98//SuperPi.JPG

Ran the rig overnight for 8 hours at 4300 looping a movie.
No issues at all and very responsive.

I would bet I'll wind up at 4200MHz 24 hour stable unless I can lick the heat issue on Core 1.
I'll try and post an SS later.

So far I am really impressed by the E8400's performance.

I also think the Everest Stress is pretty nifty for monitoring temps
http://premium1.uploadit.org/soundx98//Eve...Stress-Test.JPG

I wouldn't worry about flashing the 109 Bios at this point.
I couldn't even get into the Bios without flashing to it and the Tmod/Loggan CD did a superb job of making it easy for me.
http://csd.dficlub.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1525
hats off to those oldfahts smile.gif

Pick up a spare Bios Chip (much cheaper than a CPU) and keep an Official Bios on it in Case of Armageddon.
Great idea to have one of the around anyway with a DFI board.
(plus a Rosary, prayer shawl, and a couple of Nuns)

Thanks for all the words of encouragement.
(Campbell I got so much wood I could poke your eye out from here) biggrin.gif

My Command Rate is at 2T instead of 1T.
Did I miss a setting?
