When I remove the IHS and I put the HSF back on, should I put something between the capacitators on top of the CPU and the HSF? Like taking the foam pad and cutting a rectangle in the shape of the core in the middle of it, then putting that on the CPU, then putting on the HSF?

I don't know what kind of HSF you have, but it shouldn't be necessary at all. Never heard of anyone cracking their core. But you are aware that you should use a cooler that uses bolts and springs, right? Otherwise the loss of height of the CPU due to the IHS removal could cause bad contact between the heatsink and core.

lol. I ghetto modded my TT Big Typhoon VX and it fits more tightly than before.

I'm trying this right now with an old Celeron 1.86. I was wondering what the IHS is so I youtubed IHS Removal and I got some videos on how to do it and I knew what it was. I just don't know what the shams are that this video mentions at the end:

I'm having the same issue with schoolslave right now. My naked core isn't making any contact with the HSF. I've tried using strips of a rubber band but it's not working. Can't I use a highly cleaned penny with ceramique on the top and bottom of it and place it between my HSF and naked core or will that fry the processor?

Id try putting ceramique on the core and putting the IHS back on. That worked for me until I modded my Big Typhoon.

you have been a member since 05? and you never heard of people cracking cores ? hmmm I know of three people here cracking mobiles (same thing) trying to mod xp90s. Its just nuts to try and use a non bolt on

be a good idea if you was to try to use as5. might keep the as5 from spreading to places not meant to be. But then useing AS5 is nuts too

lol I always used AS5, even got it all over the CPU once but it still worked. I started using ceramique though because I heard that supposedly its safer.

consider yourself real lucky as there tread after tread of crying. people putting it on video cards, chip set and CPU. And it most not recommended. on a lidless or mobile CPU. exspeshaly when your trying to stear someone in the right direction. Ive used it on my lidless cpus but you better be very careful what its gets on(ceramique though because I heard that supposedly its safer) theres no supposedly about it IT IS

i use as5 and i dont see how it can spread all over like you guys are talking about unless you use alot of it. mine spreads nice and even across core with almost none hangin out over it. i will continue to use it and nothing anyone can say will change my mind

I've used it on lidless chips, video cards, etc. as well and I've never had a problem. If I use it on a naked chip, I spread it out by hand. If it's on an IHS, I put some in the middle and let the heatsink spread it out.

Angry has a
better video on IHS removal. I think it was video ... remember it as video ... if only pics they were surely moving.

on my single core i put a dap in the center on the dual core i had to put 2 lil daps spread out cause the first time i installed it one core temps went crazy and after removing the hsf i noticed it didnt get all that side.
and yeah it was a video syngen

@Gir are you talking 2 daps on a core without IHS or with? I wonder if that could be a reason for some of the uneven CoreTemp readings? Too simple probably. I've never seen a dual core inside, is the chip wider?

yes on a naked cpu core. the reason i had uneven temps was a single dab in the middle didnt spread out evenly, it had a little bit with no tim. so i put dabs at 25% and 75% across the chip (half the size of a single dab from before) and yeah the core is larger than on a single core chip

Here's how I put paste on exposed chips. I used to put a dab in the middle but I had the same problem that you ran into.

It's hard to see but im guessing you put a thin coat on the core.

Jumping subjects, but remember those little felt pad things on the four corners of XP chips? That would give a little safety edge if one could find them. But there never used to be IHS so why the big scare on taking them off? Speaking as one who has not done it.

I see no scare in taking them off, it's easy as wiping your ass!

Yep, that's what I did. I used a small flathead screwdriver so it's not as good as can be done with something like a single edged razor blade, but it still works

lol. Ive removed 3 IHSs and 2 were successful. On my 4000+ I slipped with the razor and chipped a whole corner right off.

wow, you must have been putting some major pressure behind that blade

I guess I was pointing it away from the IHS rather than towards it.

i put a little bit of electrical tape on the 4 corners of the pcb, which made it more balanced of a fit, so i wouldn't crush a side of the core.
