Hey, my hard drive makes clicking noises when in use. I think it is when it is seeking. Was just wondering, is there anything i could use that would really get rid of that noise? I have 2 seagate barracuda's (each 7200.9).
I was thinking of getting something like this:

Those baffle boxes will help reduce noise. However, something like that without fans will increase the temperatures of your HD. It is pretty hard to get rid of the clicking noise. You can get rid of most of the HD vibrations by decoupling them from the case with rubber/silicon washers.

Yeah, I'd use the rubber washer solution since heat can and most likely will deteriorate your drive(s). Has it always made this sound, or is this a new thing? I only ask because you might want to back it up ASAP since I had a drive waaaaay back that started clicking a week before it decided to suicide.

I'll agree with Boo, if it's a new thing it could be your drives death knell. If it isn't new, the coolermaster cooldrive racks do a good job at muffling the drives while doing an exelent job at eliminating vibrations.

Back up your data & order a new Seagate 7200.10!
Your HDD is dying.

My hard drives have been clicking since i bought them. They arn't dying as my friend has a 7200.10 250gig and his clicks too. But not as loud as mine. Today i tried taking 1 out of the rack while it was still at work. The clicking noises were decreased a lot (maybe even less then half). So would you have any solutions? I personally think these hdd boxes are a good solution and thermal reviews arn't too bad. If you have any ways of getting rid of hdd noises please post them or if you know of any better products, post them too.
Thankyou.

I use rubber washers between the mounting screws.
Seriously though, I know the sound of clicking death. Even if you dont think your HD is dying, back your stuff up.
I've had Waaaaaay to many HD deaths happen to me before.

My hard drive has been making 'clunking' noises since day 1. Hasnt failed yet. Its a seagate 7200.7 250 gig. As for eliminating vibrations washers work well but your best bet would be a 5.25 bay device with fans etc.

Check your SMART status now and then to check if your drive stablility.
You can use an enclosure but I would recommend one that has a fan built in. Also, try placing your HD at the the bottom of the case or the furtherest bay from you.

The only one I can remember that was really bad, was a Fujitsu 4.3GB HD back in the real old days ... it starting clicking and died on the day AFTER its one year warranty was up. I never was able to back up the data on that one, but I sure learned my lesson ... BACK up, BACK up and BACK up!!!

Internal 500GB Maxtor HDD - $195.00
Venus DS3 External Enclosure - $40.00
Backing up daily - PRICELESS
Just do it
What's nice about a 500GB internal HDD in an external enclosure is if you have failure on a hard drive and have only one to begin with, you can stick the backup in moemntarily so as to not lose use of computer. Backing up is like going to the dentist. Everyone knows they should but no one really wants to do it *shrug*
