I cut the fan grills out of my case today with a dremel with the intention of getting more flow and a little less noise.

What I didn't expect was the 10C drop in temps  I can't believe removing the grills increased flow so much that everything is running much cooler smile.gif

I guess SmartGuardian was correct this whole time and I was wrong ohmy.gif It was reporting idle temps of 60C+ for the CPU yesterday and now it's in the high 40's. I still think it's a bit off...maybe by 2-3C but it was more or less on target. That means I ran Prime95 for 12+ hrs at 65C...poor processor sad.gif

Now my rig is cool as a cucumber at 2.9GHz....yeah baby yeah!!! biggrin.gif

I shall never doubt again...

Congrats !

Yea, taking those grills out sure do make a difference.. they get pulled out of every case I build.

lol there just a unch of little holes drilled there that get in the way make sure to get some real grills to prevent a finger or anything els from getting in thenow un protected fans.

What kind of grills were they? Square, circles, diamond, mesh, ect? Older cases us horribly restrictive designs leaving like 30% open. Newer cases tend to realize that block fans with thick grills is a bad thing.

I wish that people wernt so stupid that they needed to put fan guards on the case lol

well if little kids ever get around it lol or my cat sticks his nose in it and breaks fan blades.

Yea or if you have a stupid moment.. forget you removed them and break a fan blade off with a piece of your finger.. umm.. not like Ive done that before.

Well, the rear grill was mesh and the front grill was...circles I guess. The main problem was the front grill though. The case also had some plastic molding over the front fan which further impeded flow. I cut those out as well so you just see a big square hole and a blender inside biggrin.gif

Too late... Tornadoes are truly finger choppers. Was putting my hand in various places to feel the new fan flow and bssrrrrhhtttt!!! It took the front skin of my thumb off. I almost thought I might need stitches. Thank goodness I didn't break the fan though...that would have really sucked biggrin.gif

3 blade TT fan from a Volcano HSF = DANGER! I was messing around with the inside of my computer while it was running... I know not the best idea, but I was trying to figure out how much airflow a fan was getting while mounted or move a wire that was almost getting eaten by a fan or something...

And my pinkey sliped into the fan... Just thought it hurt... Till I saw the blood runing down my arm... Those 3 blade fans are rather pointy and sharp rolleyes.gif

Yup, I suppose there's a first time for everything smile.gif Another side-effect of the better cooling is that my PSU doesn't put out warm air anymore. I guess the intake fan was picking up the ambient heat...which is good in a way...but cooler is always better smile.gif

That's ok, because I've got everything out of the case, right? And I've got my 3x3.5" bay sitting on my desk with a fan, and I've still got stuff on the desk and whatnot. So anyroad, I was reading a book one time, and I went to put it down. Next thing I know I'm hearing this noise coming from my computer. Turns out the dust protector thing on my book was getting caught in the fan. It didn't do any damage but it made a hell of a racket. biggrin.gif

I removed the grills on my old case too, and it definitely made a difference. Except I didn't have a Dremel so I cut each intersection by hand with a pair of wire cutters. I didn't get it all done in one day obviously. biggrin.gif

I'm gotten at LEAST six blood drawing cuts from fan blades...
Bobyboy101
i've lost some skin around my knucles and the tip of my pinky finger so far
my aim is to have a finger cut of completely but they needa improve the fans a bit more lol

I've only had it draw blood once, when the tip of the blade caught on the pad of my middle finger, but I've had nails broken (I'm a classical guitarist).
