it may do nothing, it may create a short, or it may burn out your LED, we don't know the volatge coming off of your motherboard. if you want to take a DMM to your mobo headers and find out, you can figure out the resistance you need for a current limiting resistor...also you will need to know the maximum current output of the motherboard header...
How would one get to know the maximum current the header supports then? I read that just by using a meter will not cut it, since there is no load. If the case has a red LED, then it will report lesser than if the case had a blue LED.
There has to be some kind of standard someplace, or people who swap out cases would get very different results based on what the motherboard makers decided.
From what I have been reading so far, 2.2V is about minimum, 3 is average, with some going to 5.
