Kandoo
been wanting to post this for a long time, so today is the day. The Ultra-D and Deskstar HDD's I bought from soundx98 (thank you soundx). It is rounded out with a opty 146, 6800gt, ocz BH5 ram, vc-re, xp-90 HS, sunbeam fan controller, FDD, lite on cd/dvd read and write, thermaltake 500w PSU, and a thermaltake shark case. This mod is all about the case because in my opinion this case sucks...here is a link to the case in question.

this case blows...open side vents lets gobs of dust into the case. the luveres on the front of the door reduces air flow, when u open the door, u see another grill made of plastic located on the bottom that reduces air flow to the fan behind it. All in all a very bad design. So this is what i did.

I cut the plastic grill off the bottom front of the case. cut a piece of thin plastic to cover it. installed a 120mm fan and filter on it and screwed it all to the front cover.

This is the final look of the front housing.
Kandoo
then i covered the side vents with red plastic.

here is the other side.
soundx98
very nice work as always.
Kandoo
next came the front door, i wanted to keep the door off but the boy wanted it on so this is what i did.

I removed the metal luvers on the door and drilled bullet holes into it. door closed view.

door open view.

also in this pic u can see the mod for the grill on the bottom of the housing. that red filter grill sitting above it is also a small mod.

I bought a Kuma bay 120mm fan housing, but it only has little tabs that u use to screw it to the drive bay, but i needed railes installed on it because this case uses railes only...

so i screwed the railes to it and installed some copper tubing on the back of the rails inorder to give it support.

next i installed a 120mm fan on the back of the unit by using zip ties on the bottom copper tube. notice the little sheetmetal wings on the side of the fan?
Kandoo
Here is with the kuma bay fan and 120mm fan attached, installed into the computer.
notice the sheetmetal tabs on the fan resting on the horazontal bars of the case.

here is another view.

and here looking from the rear of the computer.
watsonte
Really impressive I like it a lot...great job
Kandoo
OK for the back is a view of the wires.

and the cover i installed a 80mm sunbeam fan on top (i dont know why, but i did.
i may install one on the bottom in the future inorder to get outside air to the nf4 chipset.

here is the other side, note i installed a wire mesh in front of the fan.

Kandoo
down to my final pic's, the finished product....I hope someone can find something in this to inspire them...that's why i posted this...
My temps at stock speeds in summer temps.(80f-85f). CPU=27c PWMIC=34c nf4chipset=40c.....
note i need to add an 80mm fan infront of the chipset because the bottom front 120mm fan is being blocked by the HDD's.

...Thank you all and this fourm for all that u do....

Wow!

a lucky boy you have
Kandoo
Yes he is, thank you...and if you are ever in Day of Defeat you may run across him. he is playing with the name kandoo or cromm, beware he will smoke your ass for a 7 year old:)

Just excellent work man. Kudos!
cuoficr
beautiful job
21Motorcraft
Absolutely fantastic Kandoo...... It was obviously built with alot of heart....great job!
Mack27
I like the way you have angled the fan just over the motherboard/cpu/ram/ect. Great work and i hope you do some more mods near future... smile.gif

Lookin good. I am absolutely amazed that you got the holes in the front panel to be exactly the same space apart. You truly are a dremel jedi!

kandoo.. you used a dremel for the front panel? i thought it was those bench drills..
caffeinejunkie_merged
very nice. I wish I had something like that when I was seven lol.
centy
7?

I'd own him on Day Of Defeat!

Just kidding. That is a nice mod indeed, I prerfer it with the door off myself I think.
ReelFiles
Good work, and probably one of the coolest cases any 7 year old has ever owned.
Blooz1_merged
That angled fan is inspired!

Great job, Kandoo - he's lucky to have such a creative dad!

I used a a cone shaped drill bit (the tip is small and larger at the end, so the deeper u drill the larger the hole, it also reams the edges of the hole when done) inorder to get the holes even, i taped, measured, and marked the front door before i drilled. the i flipped it over and reamed the other side of the holes.

Stellar results! I love it!

So does my brother, heheh.

I originally found this thread looking for street members that used the Shark, just to see if there were problems, mods to fix them, and any other info I could find, because my younger brother is decided (nay, committed as of this morn when I put a deposit down to order one in) to get one.

He is very opposed to anything with a window, wanted something that looked progressive but not flamboyant or flashy. He had a fairly decent budget and this case is on the high side of the range which could get one into many different very nice cases. He really liked this case's look, and doesn't consider the side vents to be a window per se. It's a perfect compromise in fact, he can still see inside, but it won't put the whole thing on display unless you hide the case somewhere. biggrin.gif He also liked the Lexa Classic and of course the Stacker 830. The Stacker is a lot overbudget and overpriced in our opinion, and the Lexa has a few quirks of it's own including the dreaded window (I was offering to create a custom graphic which would be printed on a sticky-back vinyl for an applique to hide most of the view).

I looked into these Sharks via some really good reviews, and could only find one or two faults in the reviews that were of no consequence. I was impressed, it is a well thought out case that should be very enjoyable to work in, I love the mobo tray handles!

None of these reviewer's have the, ahem, standards of such high demands as Street folk, so I wasn't suprised to see undocumented faults and fixes when I came here for a look, but I was suprised to see that the main concern was airflow! I would have thought it to be very efficient and potent. However, I've never actually seen or touched one, so I suppose there is no way to know how much that front panel blocks air unless you speak with people that own them and have high standards.

Once I saw the first few pics here, I emmediately pasted the link to him in Xfire chat, and he had a good look and read too. This thread sinched the deal. He now knows there is nothing else to watch out for about this case, and the mod's to fix the airflow are simple and we'll definately be planning to do our own variation!

I'll be back later to probably ask some questions, got to run do some work atm.
Smoken Joe
Very nice job can you fix the Pics?

Space ot the test and the pics so it is easer to view.

The angled fan mod is inspired very neatly designed and should really help flow!
LithoTech_merged
Yeah, I like that Scythe Kama Bay, it just belongs in that case, the stock grill matches up nice. I'm having trouble finding one local though, and the shipping cost on the item from online can be steep.

I tried to fix it but I just made it worse...sorry, ill try again later.
soundx98
Kandoo, I got your back. Hope it's OK with you.
Kandoo
Thank you my brotha!!. I really messed that up, I'll try to do better next time:)

Just to let u know, I taped off the front of the kuma bay and sprayed it red with a raddle can of Rust-oleum.
Blooz1_merged
I just finished a new build, and I used a Kama Bay on it.

I'm using an Evercool aluminum-framed 120mm though - 70CFM, so it pushes some air without being overly noisy.

I got mine online:

OK Blooz1, cough it up, lets see some pic's....please:)
n1ce_hat
looks great! i like the angled fan.. good idea:)

Ok, Kandoo!

I'll grab some tomorrow - I need some batteries for the camera.

Fantastic job on your sons computer. Did he help you with it? Built my 8yr old son his first computer awhile back. He helped install some of the componets so he could get a scouting badge.
Kandoo
No badges for him on this build.

I saw that, very nice effect. In fact, looks better (to me) that the bottom grill you made. Almost worth picking up another kama bay just for the grill lol!

I'd like to do a little paint work on my Bro's case too, sort of like so:

I have some paint for another case I'm painting soon, one color is a warm burgandy, metalic flake. I'm not sure if we'll have time to do this paint mod on my Bro's case, he'll be in town for the build and then back to his home 5 hours away. But he can do this himself at any time.

I don't think we'll touch the aluminum front, but maybe paint some of the plastic for accent, and the flare on the side panel looks nice. It'd really look nice with the red tinted window.

Yeah, that's one of the only places I could find the thing. $27 including that $6.99 flat rate shipping so it will be even more for me to ship it to Canada. Plus exchange rates and taxes, puts this puppy well over $30. A little rich for what it is. However, it is a lot more professional looking than any of the 5.2 bay fan rigs I've made from spare parts and stuff.

I'm thinking it is a worthy investment, the double fan setup and pointing at the ram and cpu could be very efficeint for a hot running overclocked rig on BH-5! biggrin.gif

I haven't tried the angled fan yet, but after running this rig for a week or so, I'm planning to do that mod. I used 4 drive rails for installation, but didn't need the tubes across the rear of the rails.

Very slick, very nice. I've been a blue LED guy but that red just looks sinister and sweet.

Lucky boy! Good job man!

How about using some paint remover on the front cover (the removable parts on it). and then buff out the bare metal until it looks like crome:)

very nice set up, what kind of fan controller is that, and is that in a small drive bay.
Blooz1_merged
Kandoo - That's a Vantec controller (each channel can handle 18W), and it's mounted in a 5.25" adapter due to mounting problems with the 3.25" bay and a knob clearance issue with the door. (Look at the rear of the door, and you'll understand...)

The case is an Ultra Aluminus - it's like a Chieftec, only it uses 120mm fans. This is my "new" SLI-D/Opty 146 rig.

That freakin rocks man! I gotta agree with those that said, "I wish I had that when I was 7 years old." Oh hell, who am I kidding I wish I had that now. tongue.gif I guess I could but I'm too lazy, guess that means I wouldn't make a good dad. lol

Anyhow man, that truly is inspiring - nice job!

Awesome job Kandoo,
I have one of these cases my self and you have inspired me to mod it for the better airflow. I may do some things slightly different just so that it's not a exact replica and one of a kind.wink.gif

My first question is...
What kind of store would I pick up the colored plastic from and how is it secured to the side. From the picture it kind of looks like rivets but I can't tell for sure.

Thx.

The plastic is secured by sheet metal screws, The black plastic bling mounted on the outside covers the screws sticking out of the cover. You will have to find a store near you (yellow pages)maybe a sign company, or art store. Also one thing to remember, I used red plastic on the side so now only red led fans show? If I put a blue one in there it would look like a regular fan. If u do find someone selling the stuff your gonna have to deside how dark the plastic will be, the more dark the less light will be seen inside the case.
dsaint
O.K. on closer inspection of my cover, I am certain on how you secured it now. Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

Just ordered a Scythe Kama Bay, thx for showcasing it.

awesome case, love the red window on the side.

Allow me to contradict you. biggrin.gif

Most dads felt that way at some point in younger years. No one is a natural good dad, it is something that evolves when you have children, and begin to learn how to be a parent. As the child gets older, you gain more experience and become an even better parent. The child teaches you as much about being a parent as you do teaching the child to be a good human. You loose interest in things like weekends and parties when the kid is a baby, so no worries about that lol. It is definately a life changing experience that is far too rewarding to even consider not having kids because you think maybe you wouldn't be a good dad. Every father out there will tell you it is the greatest experience there is in life, and not one of them wouldn't sacrifice anything to keep. Some time in the future when you do have kids of your own, you'll remember this! wink.gif
