is this a smart move? it's pretty loud.

I would just replace it.

To disable it you pretty much have to void the warranty so you may as well just replace the fan with a quieter unit. Don't think I would stop airflow through the PSU completely though. Depending on how good the overheat protection is on the PSU it's possible it could take a few of your parts with it if it goes.

Disabling the fan will cause the power supply to eventually not work properly.

(Probably sooner than later... like a few seconds after turning it on...)

It serves a function and is not there just to look pretty, lol.

replacing it will void the warranty too. to replace it you need to open it up. once u break the seal the warranty is gone. but for me i just look out the front fan in my powerstream 520 and cut the leds off of the rear fan. but i have plenty of airflow going to the psu so im fine.

If it bothers you that much, replace it, the PSU needs a fan.

Try adding an exhaust fan to it, a quiet one, like I have.

If that doesn't quiet down the normal fan, and you don't want to replace the normal fan, and it bothers you that much, sell it off and buy an Antec.. my truepower is the quietest part of my system even with the other fans at 5-6v with damping, under full load, and that was before I put the exhaust fan in. They're stable and the EPS one is less than $100.

not worth modding if the PSU is new.

ocz warranty... very good if anything happens...

ya never know when lightning would just strike your house.
