I remember reading about the wheel mod a while back, that was some awesome work.
Also got me interested in the hardware.
The WoMD one is just kick arse, turning up to a LAN with that and a screen would get some attention.

I was actually reading through the work log for the DOOM case on best case scenario...Very very well made...although I think people who do those mods are nuts...or maybe I'm just too lazy...hmmmm

I think "obsessed" is the word! One of my fav's is this one:
http://www.wizdforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1758"BaDassumption" - 90% custom-machined billet aluminum, this rig's been in the works for over a year, not done yet!

I saw one a long time ago that I still think about, the entire exterior of the case was made from fans. I think they all even turned on. Can't seem to find it though.

Not really a case mod, but still pretty impressive what this guy has done. I haven't seen it but I believe it's still in Ames. He's experimenting with a dielectric bath - basically submerging the motherboard in a dielectric fluid and cooling the fluid down. This is in addition to the custom cooler for the cpu and graphics cards....pretty cool stuff.
I've been thinking about using the polishing wheels for my TDX sometime this summer...just for sumthin to do.

i really like that 'honorable mention' Boss FX-57 mod. Very well done, i think someone should produce more muscle-car-era computer cases..

Thanks for that one, Dan!
Kinda like "old home week" - we used to use the exact same equipment at the company I used to work for for many years for metallographic samples used for measuring electroplating thickness! It's not as simple as it looks to get a good finish, by a long shot!
BTW - any idea of the cost of that project?

No clue, I'm guessing that since he's a student he has access to all the machining tools and whatnot for free, but besides that it has to be a pretty expensive project.
I've really been considering building my own phase system into my V2000...but I dunno. Just seems like a lot of work right now when I've got other things that need done.

Actually, I was thinkin' more about the materials than the tooling. (I figgured he'd be able to use that for free, if it's at yer school...)
But there's some hefty stainless there, and all the cooling equipment, etc....an interesting project, for sure!

Actually I think the case was made out of aluminum...but still yeah that can't be all that cheap for a sheet that size. Probably gets a discount through the university though.

Yeah, I went back and took a second look - he does say it's aluminum! Sorry!
Still, pretty hefty stuff he's workin' with!
So he'd get a materials discount, too? Does a project like this have to be approved by faculty, or could you just walk into that shop and "have at it" on any personal project?

Well, basically we can order stuff through the school and get a discount on most things, especially if it's based on our courses and can be shown to have some learning value to us. Not sure about chemicals though...I DO know I can get liguid nitrogen cheaper than gas though.

Mountainmods had one where a guy modded a U2 to include a functional Mountain Dew dispenser (the syrup and water kegs, and the refrigerator obviously sat outside the case, but everything else was inside, IIRC).

*dies, just a little*
Indeed very well crafted, and i'm diggin' the fact that they powdercoated the, erm,
frame red, and painted the body black, giving a very nice effect.
Those silver domes that cover the fans in the front really make it look like your looking in the hood of a musclecar, but they can't really get a whole lot done with those domes covering 90% of the fan! Oh well, the things you do for looks.. Oh, and the 5.25" drive bay cover opening up is very slick! Very Corvette-like indeed.

These mods are awesome, but the Orac3 in my opinion is still the undisputed champion when it comes to craftsmanship.

Okay, this is a really lame casemod. However, I remember reading about it a magazine somewhere.
There was a college student who built a entire computer inside various plastic milk crates like this
one. He did his mod to save space in his dorm. But it was actually pretty cool and it did look functional as well as saving a lot of space (he stacked up a 3 by 2 array of milk crates, he used 2 for his computer, and the rest as bookshelves).
Having a fairly small dorm room, I might actually try this very easy mod. However, I can't remember at all where I saw it from. Does anyone know the magazine where you may have read it from? Thanks....
