Well, I am finally going to do it, gonna remove the IHS from my opty 170. I've toyed with the idea for a while and after a conversation i had on a previous thread i decided that i wanted to. Well the final straw happened a little while ago when i pulled my CPU out of this rig to test another mobo (no i don't have a spare chip , tho i wish i did) and the temps that board reported were a little troublesome. I tested an Asus A8N32-SLI and in the bios it reported my CPU idle @ 50c!!! I also had a temp sensor on the side of the IHS that reported the temp at around 41c. Now this is with Stock settings, AS5 & the stock HSF (which is pretty impressive for a stock fan as many of you know)

So my only conclusion is that my eXpert is misreporting my temps (or that the Asus is overheating my chip, but given the known issues with the experts, i have to assume the former), which seemed normal enough to me, 34-35c idle / 46-47c load @ about 21c ambient. I thought that i was a lucky one that didn't have the temp issues with my expert, but now i doubt that and the only way for me to know is to get a temp sensor next to the core...

So here I go... I will post my results with some pictures later tonight....

Just go slow and watch the vid a couple of times, its a lot easier the second time be with a little caution you'll be fine. smile.gif

At least mine is fine...

lol, i think i have watched the video about 10 times now... i know what to do, but i am nervous...

Now i'm totally confused...
I pop the lid off with no problem, except some sweaty palms wink.gif
Put the temp sensor right next to the core, little bit of AS5, heatsink back on, put everything back together & start 'er up.

hop into the bios, check pc health it says my cpu is idling at 41c. Huh? usually idles around 34c... must have been a bad seating of the HS. ok.

Unplug everything, pull the HS back off, check it, well it made good contact over most of the core (95%). Ok that must be it, redo AS5, reseat, double check, ok reseat, plug everything back in, start 'er up. Bios, PC Health, idle around 36-37, well thats a little better, lets try dual prime.

get into windows, check smartguardian - idle around 38-39c. hmmm, thats odd. temp sensor is about 1c below, ok maybe its cause AS5 hasn't cured... Ok Dual prime..

first core, temps shoots up to 50c... second core temps shoots up to 57c!! WTF is going on here. temp sensor says 49.5c - MBM5 says 57c. prior to popping the IHS my idle/load temps according to MBM5 were 35c/47c. What in the world is going on?

Now i don't know what to do, or which sensor to believe. and i am a bit stressed out over all this. ok, gonna walk away and calm down, probably check the seating on the heatsink again, and try to figure out what to do.

please, any advice anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated...

Your temp sensor is probably going to read low no matter what, it just won't get close enough to give dead on results. That said, the spread was a little wide. How close was the sensor to the core?

Also, is your sensor restricting the heatsink from going down all the way? Sounds like you still don't have very good contact.

I agree with ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

sounds like a bad mount

What HSF are you using?

Big Deep Breath In...... long sigh of relief out.....

ok, so things aren't as bad as i thought, the HSF was not seated properly, i think that the sensor was preventing good contact. i moved it then reseated everything and now things are much better... the temps have dropped 2 degrees of idle & load, not much but 2 degrees is still 2 degrees. and i am happy smile.gif hopefully the temps drop another degree or 2 when the AS5 cures. Thanks everybody for your help, i will post some pics in the morning cuz i am too sleepy to do it tonight...
