just wondering if ne1s done this with a good drop in temp? or is it better to lap the heatsink (XP-120)

my sandy is already out of warranty as it was OEM

too risky for me to take of the IHS, so i'm, just wonderin if lappin it will help at all tongue.gif if so, i guess i have a project for spring break lol

I would be a little scared to lap the IHS as you may get some metal dust on the contacts of the processor; and seeing as how it's already "shiny" it should be pretty darn flat. I think you would be better off, and safer, lapping the XP-120

I'd tell you this i made the mistake of lapping my buddy's P4 3.2ghz 630 and it misreported clock speed as 3.4Ghz so maybe it isn't a good idea. Lapping HSF would give you enuff heat dissipation to keep temps stable and low.

i would pop the top, before i would lap.
i just read somewhere recently, and i cant remember where, but it was saying that lapping the ihs can cause uneveness on the ihs.
besides...lapping wont help much, if the tim used under the ihs is crappy, and if the ihs is not making good contact with the core...imho
