Okay so it broke. I'm not sure how, i heard it power down and i smelled something funny.. lol


Anyways, the psu wasn't connected to anything but the atx 20-pin just for purposes of trouble shooting the fan power.


Can just powering a computer w/o the 4-pin connector be bad for your system? I know, stupid question but you never know.

I ran my NF3 250GB for 3 days without the 4 pin with no harm.. Changed water blocks and forgot to plug it back in. Even OC'd the same.

now you have a death PSU... ...i dont know what you didi wrong...or if you damaged somthing in the process of changing those fans...but it sure killed it.

I don't think someone can actually "kill" a power supply by messing up with the fan connections, mainly because the modern power supplies have protection for the short circuit protection. Only way is for a component to be worn out due to age or ruthless use, and it dying eventually with a big explosion.

however a bad voltage feed from the wall outlet, don't know maybe during a thunder storm, that is something else.

I don't think the reason of the PSU 'breaking' was because of faulty wiring. Actually, i'm trying to find out where i can send the PSU to get it fixed.

When it 'broke' it the weather was perfect. The psu cover was off, the atx 20 pin was plugged in, and it was being powered from a surge protector. I flipped the I/O switch ON and i 'heard' it powering DOWN as well as i smelled something funny afterwards.

There was no smoke but i had a feeling something bad happened. I went out and borrowed my gfs power supply and my motherboard seems responsive.

So i can isolate the problem is DEFINITLY with the 'broken' psu.

If anyone knows any where in the US i can send this PSU, let me know. =)

Is that your PowerStream that just came through bro? Oh man, yeah i ran a board once (not dfi) without the 4pin without problems. It's mainly for the processor so i wasn't trying to overclock it anyway, but once a buddy of mine noticed it i connected it without any problems being done to the board.

My i ordered a powerstream through newegg, OVERNIGHT!!!! ... i know newegg usually ships ahead of schedule but i didn't want to take the chance that it'd take 3 days =(


I might order an enermax or antec b/c they're cheap and could be good backups.


NOTE: this is an EXTRMELY old psu. Do you think antec would still RMA it even if the warranty is void?

Most power supplies had 1 year, sometimes 3 years warranty. The new models have 3 and sometimes 5 years. You don't loose anything for asking to the support department at Antec.

Once you pop the top it's over. More than likely it would cost more to fix than to buy a new one by the time you factor in shipping both ways plus repairs.

oh well, it was a bold venture that i failed to finish. Thanks again for the responses...
