Hi, up front i'm a noob in training....please make responses "see spot run"

I have backed up my cards Bios, downloaded Nibitor 2.7

Question is: when I open up the Nibitor 2.7 Tool the 1st screen that it opens that should contain all the data....example.......

File: D:\
Device:
Bios Version:
Vendor:
Date:

ETC........... are all blank.

All of the tutorials show the above "filled out" displaying all the info.

Am I supposed to enter this info? Or am I mucking this up at the very start?

Don't want to screw up as I am already in over my head! Thanks
lowsidr
I opened up the Nibitor folder, saw that there was two 3kb sys.files I dragged and dropped the non 64 bit one into the Nibitor exe and it opened up the tool, sadly a screen popped up saying: this bios is not supported. You can then choose what you have ar think you have but this didn't display the correct values as shown in "coolbits"... Anyone got any idea where i'm messing up? Gotta be me.
NEOAethyr
Upload your bios here.

I have'nt ever looked at the voltages and speed tables of a gf7 but I could take a shot at it.
If it looks normal to me I can mod it by hand, then upload to you as an attachment.

I'll give you a batch to flash with along with autoexec, the autoexec would flash the backup bios.
That way you can blind flash if such a problems happens.

I would explain the whole thing if you are willing to go along with it and if I can actually figuer the bios out.
I got some 7800 gtx bios'es but I have'nt looked at them in some time, not your specific bios anyways.

Anyways it's totally up to you, I could at least take a look at it.
I don't use nibitor to mod the bios, I do it all by hand so I'm used to it.
Some day I'm gonna have to make a program for all of it though or something...
lowsidr
Hi Neo....I really appreciate your offer...I don't want to impose though. Seems like a lot of work for you.....besides that, I don't even know how to "upload my Bios" to you. I was looking for a link, duh. Would hate for you to waste your time taking me through step by step as that what it would take. VERY cool of you to offer!!!

I know a bunch of others have done the soft mod, I was thinking (hoping) I was doing something wrong... is it related to the fact my card is an EVGA (diff Bios?)? Or should Nibitor have been able to read my cards bios simply because it is a 7800gt? I'm confused.......
NEOAethyr
It's actually no prob at all dude, very easy to locate and do if I can.
I could even setup diff voltages then what anyone else could, like half steps.

Like if you're looking to up to say 1.45v I could do that, or 1.5v, whatever is actually possible though.

The reason why nibitor freaks is likely do to the device id's on your card's bios.
Unless you have a corrupt bios that is.

Nibitor does'nt have some of the id's.
Also the board id is wrong in it most of the time, it gets that offset right one one bios that I've seen, I think it was a quadrofx540.

Anyways you should beable to open it up anyways, unless liek I said it's bad.
It'll say unknown device or somehting liek that, just pick your core type, I think it had 3.
Gf-fx, gf6 and gf7's.

From there change the voltage from say 1.4v to 1.5v.
You should have to extend the voltage table, if you do it changes nothing, it only gives you more options smile.gif.

Ok looking at a gainward 7800gtx bios right now for the heck of it.
Bios ver: 5.70.02.11.24

I just scrolled down, did'nt take me long at all lol, I'm used to the bios wink.gif, to find this string:
KDASHARE

Right afterwards is a series of FF'hs.
Those are the 4 tables, 2d, then 3d, then 3d idle, then some unknown one.
Lemme see if I can figuer out the default voltage for it.

Hmm the 2d voltage is lower then I've seen before...
78h.

This if from my experience so far:

82: 1.3v VCore
8C: 1.4v VCore
91: 1.45v VCore
96: 1.5v VCore
9B: 1.55v VCore?
A0: 1.6v VCore?

It has 8Ch for all the rest of the perfromance level's except for the last, which is 00h.
It's a null like performance lv anyways, no one uses it, I wold have to flash it enabled and check it out using the driver cpl just to see if it's even used at all for anything...

Anyways, default core votlage for everythign but 2d is 1.4v.
I "think", guessing, 2d is 1.2v.

I've found that I can clock well o 2d even if I don't mod the voltage for that on my 6600gt, 550 with stock voltage for 2d...
I can't mod the 3d voltage on my card because it does more harm then good.
I can't handle the heat even though I can cool the card somewhat decently with air coolingl.

Anyways smile.gif, as you can see it's not an issue at all.
I could even piont it out and have you doit lol.
Anyways try to get nibitor working.
If you can't, attach the bios you should of backed up from your card to here, it should be pretty small, 64,512 bytes if it's valid.
I can at least look at the begining of it to see there's anythign wrong with it, and try getting it to work with nibitor.
It's really not that big of a deal, very easy stuff smile.gif.

Edit:
Btw, what do you mean by softmod?
I know there's a way to read back the vid, but that does'nt give you the voltage actyually used unless you know what the vid stands for.
That's only to read back the voltage.
It's actually useless anyways...

Please explain, I'm curious smile.gif.
lowsidr
Hey there Neo...appreciate you getting back. Been messing around w/nibitor off and on all day. Can't get it to read...yes there is an option for the "7" series but was afraid to change anything....went to check my back-up bios prior to trying that I put on the floppy I made and when I went to open it it was empty....the floppy DID boot into "dos" and I entered the command to save my old bios, it showed that it did, but now the same floppy is empty, doesn't even have the nvflash file or the cwsdpmi file that was on it before I saved my old bios. I'm miffed. Tried the procedure again with a fresh floppy and get errors not to use the disk.....I was using "Drdflash" to make the floppy a bootable, but now it won't load without the error message....I gotta find a better way to make the floppy a "bootable" disk, then try it again. Yes I am that stupid!

As for "softmod": The guide I read for modding my 7800gt bios voltage called it softmodding as it doesn't require you to solder anything or bridge anything via pencil mod or what have you.

I'm burnt out today..head is going to explode or something....gonna chill and game a bit. I'll PM you when I get my bios sorted.

BTW-------didn't understand half of what you wrote, wife took a look at what I was doing and just shook her head and walked away....of course I played it off as this stuff is a piece of cake...if she only knew how clueless I really am! lol

Thanks.
Killing_Halo
i have the same evga it comes auto overlcocked to 470 so .... id love a moded bios to 1.5v i think that is the highest it will alow without hard moding it. Well that is why it doesnt seem to pick up the bios in nibitor 2.7. I think i might be wrong
lowsidr
Hi Killing....Have you tried the mod yourself yet?
Loony_merged
I just did this and had no gain at all...oh well...

I THINK the answer you're looking for is:

Click tools > read BIOS > select device

Then...

Tools > read BIOS > read into NiBitor

Then it should show your clock speeds and such. Hope I'm right... biggrin.gif

i was itching to say this after reading throughout the replies lol

yes i think thats what he's lookin for. do NOT load a pre-selected values from the drop down list!! use the steps above instead!!!!!!

btw, use nibitor 2.6a. imo its better.

do NOT use any other online tutorial (that i know of) becoz theyre just way too complicated. please follow these:
- read the bios from the steps above
- save it to have a default bios backup.
- go to the voltage settings.
- change 1.4 into 1.5.
- save the rom file with another name.
- finish!

load the rom file with nvflash, flash it wit a floppy. ur done.

other tutorial said u need to do the 6800 trick to enable the 1.5voltage. this has been fixed in nibitor after v2.6.

good luck wink.gif
Redbeaver
btw, Neo, DONT CONFUSE THE GUY! lol

ur offering him to modify the bios MANUALLY, its like popping the rom file in a notepad and changin the values. might work too, but for n00bs like us i prefer nibitor. good program. select from drop-down list. wink.gif
lowsidr
Confuse the guy?

LOL

I was like a deer looking at the headlights of an oncoming semi when I read and tried to grasp Neo's offer....LOL.....guy's good!

I'm taking baby steps right now....i'll get there eventually!

Thanks for the advice.....i'll update when I have this figured out....hoping that 1 volt will help as I am at 475/1120 now, any more and I artifact.
lowsidr
Thank you to everyone. Loony was right on the money, I wasn't doing it right, after getting it to work......so easy! I'm embarrased I asked for help.....I had NO gain at all, actually dropped my auto detect settings! I'll try to manually tweak this "in game" and see what happens.

Was still fun learning how to do it though! I think it's my 516 core and crap memory....should have got the CO!!! Didn't know any better at the time.
lowsidr
Update......I was able to run at 479/1.15 with only a "hint" of artifacting...prior to the mod it would artifact like crazyrat these settings. Bottom line is I went down to 476/1.15 with no artifacts. The mod did help a LITTLE, I guess it all adds up in the end......just wish it would have done more. Oh, it does run hotter though, to the tune of 5c, maxes at 63c so no worries.
Redbeaver
ur eVGA...... if u look at the code at the back of the card, theres a little sticker to it. can u tell me wahts ur code? im interested at the 5xx number. like my GT CO is 517, the GT CO SE is 518 etc...

i kno its all different results for evrybody, but the mod gave me 520/1230+, wit a "hint" of artifact lol. i run mine now at 510/1200 just to be on the safe side. difference is minimal anyway.

what im confused is, if u slap the AC NV5 in there, u should get better result. the temp seems good, 63 on a full load, but i bet u can get 490 on the core.... somehow......

did u mount ur cooler properly? lemme kno wit the part number smile.gif

edit: what could went wrong too is the nibitor procedure. after u load the info to nibitor, u DO NOT follow that guide on changin to 6800 series first, blablabla... all u have to do is to change the volt mod settings on the 2nd tab from 1.4 to 1.5. thats it. and re-flash.
lowsidr
Hey Red,

Mine is: CO (thanks, didn't know that!) p2n516ax....i "think" my problem is that it's the 516...from what i've been reading anyway and based on my results.....

I installed it correctly to the best of my knowledge...my temps were down to 57 after the nv5 rev3 install...after the volt mod it did go up. Havent tried A/S 5 on the gpu, used the stock pad. Temps don't seem to be the problem....memory does not want to go up nor the core....

I used nibitor 2.6 and only changed the volts to 1.5...then "saved"....i'm assuming the save function was the re-flash?

If i've missed something please do let me know. Thanks!
Redbeaver
LOL

oh man sorry for laughing man, really i meant no harm and u are NOT stupid in anyway.... its just its funny when people are stilll learning stuff like these... and i shall not and should not laugh i know... im bad. im sorry.

but, after u changed the 1.5, ur supposed to save it as a .rom file, say, oc.rom or 1234.rom, wutever... That is the save function. it saves ur configuration onto a file. nibitor reads it from the vga, then u change the values, and u save it. to somewhere in ur computer. ur desktop, my documents, wutever. but it does not, i repeat, it does NOT change anything in ur card. no wonder u didnt get any increase.

after u read from the vga card into nibitor 2.6a, u change the 1.4 to 1.5. then u save that into a .rom file.

THEN u look for nvflash program, which consists of 2 files (forgot which one), but check that tutorial again in ur first post in this thread. copy that to an ms-dos bootable floppy ALONG with ur brandnew .rom file, watever u named it.

reboot, then follow the instructions to re-flash ur card.

then it will reboot itself again with the 1.5V.

voila.

NOW check ur auto-detect wink.gif
Redbeaver
bah, u didnt have the link in the 1st post. i guess i thought this is another thread. anyhow, head to mvktech.net, and download the newest version of NVFLASH.

read the instruction.

after u saved the new config from nibitor into a .rom file, copy that file, along wit the 2 files for nvflas, into a bootable floppy.

reboot into the floppy, then it will go into DOS.

here's what you type (lets say your new bios rom file is called 'newbios.rom')

nvflash -b a:\backup.rom

nvflash -r
nvflash -4 -5 -6 -A -y a:\newbios.rom

every newline u hit enter. the 1st one with -b is to save ur present bios into a rom file called 'backup.rom' in the floppy. u can change that wit c:\saveoldbios.rom if u want to, that file will be copied there.

GOOD LUCK!! biggrin.gif

Redbeaver...can't thank you enough....it's OK to LOL at this...I don't take that personal, huge and steep learning curve going on in my house right now!

Hell, this IS how you learn.

This is such a wicked cool forum....I'll do it "right" this weekend and post back....HOPEFULLY with some good news.

Thanks for the "see spot run" help...I appreciate it big time!!!

Enjoy your weekend!

Redbeaver!!!!!! You rule dude!!!!!

Man, this is awesome.....followed your instructions to the letter.....go figure, "actually flashing" the card does make a differance....LOL

I'm now sitting at.....drum roll please..... 504/1.17.

Havem't re-run my benchies but i'm sure there will be an improvement....

Owe it all to you buddy! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!
lowsidr
benchie follow up...

3dmark5 was at 7795 before.....now sitting pretty at 8186.....wow, amazing what a single volt can do!

That's alot better.

You should be able to bump your's higher than what I have now...do you have coolbits? It's really easy...
lowsidr
Yeah, already use coolbits, those settings were from the auto detect feature. Any artifacting at your settings loony? That 516\1255 is smokin!

She runs smooth...auto detect did ~513/~1180. I just bumped it until coolbits' test failed...then kept running 3dmark and now I'm here...518/1255...

She's usually ~68c during 3dmark, I have the fan on 70% on 3d performace...

w00t!!! good stuff!

well, if u got good cooling, u can probably hit a tad higher than that.... try to aim 510/1200.... but remember, a 20-30Mhz overclock is not worth a toasted GPU wink.gif keep it cool!

and try to grab this progrm called rhidrible or somethin ........lol can somebody point me in the right direction? i'll post again wheni get home. its an awesome program to toast ur GPU.... check the temp while ur running it and see the temp skyrockets!
