Alright, removed my IHS. popped it into the MB w/ no ram, vid card, etc.
hit the power buttin, watch diagnostic LEDs, it goes from 4 to 3, then the 4th one blinks on real quick and then back off, and its back to just 3 LEDs. After a second or two the computer just like shuts off.
So I add RAM, it goes: 4, 3, quick blink of 4 then back to three, 2, 1, system shutdown.
Same thing happens with the video card in.

Whats going on? Is my proc dead?
THunDA
what are you using to cool it ?
sdat1333
Mcw-6002
THunDA
Clear the cmos with the battery out for 15-20 min's.. While its clearing put back your ram and video card.. Try to boot with it all installed..
sdat1333
well i cleared the CMOS with the jumper.
would the battery removal be better?

well heres my story

i thought the proc was dead, but in reality it was working. So I glued the top back on and then thought of one last thing i could do to test it so i put it back in. Turned on the comp, it worked, shut down, and took the proc out. I went to re-remove the IHS that i had resecured with superglue, while on my last corner the glue gave way and my hand slipped and i knocked a huge chip out of the die. So i tested it and its dead. But I've decided im not going to try to RMA since it was completely my fault and its wrong to make the company eat the cost on something that was completely my fault. So Im gonna be out of a proc for a week or two while i work off the cost.

Oh well

Bummer. Sorry for your loss sad.gif

I really would like to see the looks on the face of tech who gets a warranty replacement request for a chip that not only has the IHS removed but also a die ripped out smile.gif
sdat1333
well its not liek the IHS cant be glued back on
but like i said i dont wanna cheat the company
idunno1987
your best bet is to try..u never know honestly....like i know ur being honest..but sometimes u need to cheat a lil bit..just try it smile.gif
THunDA
There is no way you will be able to glue it back on without them knowing it was tampered with.. but thats just my opinion..

Without a shadow of a doubt that would be completely lame and dishonest.

Sdat, I applaud you for being honest and not trying to send it back and claim it is a faulty or defective CPU. You took the risk and it did not work out, you are being honest enough to admit you may have damaged it.

Again, gluing the lid back and trying to RMA it is LAME! You would probably try and sell someone something that was defective as new I would bet too since "sometimes u need to cheat a lil bit". Karma is a bitch, what comes around, goes around.

well when its a big 3-500 $ loss....id try anything to save my self the money (that being saifd i am only 18....i dont have the money of some of the older joes around here) sorry..thats just what id do...i am an honest person

edit: no...i would never sell a defective processor...im not like that...u can even check my ebay feedback...jeeze im just stating that it is a big loss... (i never take risks like that..biggest risk im taking right now is the mod i did on my gto2...and the watercooling im getting...and soon to be overclockin) sorry for your misinterpratation
demonR6
I don't think I am misinterpreting your comment. I quoted you word for word. Unless of course you are using a double-entendre. Whether it is five cents or five hundred dollars, it is still dishonest. If it seems like a risky thing to do, and you invested a lot of hard earned money on it, then don't risk doing something to mod it that may cause it to fail.

I modded my GTO² card as well, if it craps out due to my fault, I am not going to RMA it and send it back as defective.

Not to be argumentative or question your character, but I have to call you out on this one bro. If you are an honest person, then you would not have made that comment.
idunno1987
i understand its dishonest.....the x800 mod was a low risk almost guaranteed to work mod....thats what im trying to say if i were to do a high risk mod like he had done here.....(which i never would im not a super risk taker).....so anyways the point is....that what i wouldve done....ive never done it or anything like it.....anyways lets just drop this here and continue on our way smile.gif
sdat1333
actually its nto hard at all, and i did the mod just fine and it worked
it was trying to cut thru super glue that got me since its really hard and then it gives way really fast
red930
Mine took about 40 minutes to get off, I was really leery about it. Next time it'll go faster since I know what to expect. But seriously, once the blade finally cut through, the ENTIRE blade (exacto knife) went inside the processor. I sliced my thumb I jerked it out so fast...god I was terrified once I finally plugged it in and turned it on-I was fully prepared to just say screw it and buy a new one.

Anyways, that really sucks to lose it man-but hey, at least you learned something in the process. rolleyes.gif
sdat1333
yah dont know if i mentioned it but im gonna frame it and hang it above my monitor as a reminder

this is my first piece of killed hardware that cost more the $20 so i guess this is a right of passage of sorts into the modding world.

ive killed old power supplies and stuff by accident, but never something this expensive

demonR6 and idunno1987 thats a good idea..wink.gif

@sdat1333.. Im sorry for your loss.. But if it makes you feel better I have a Sandy 4000 that had the IHS removed.. Did 2.9-2.93gig on air and it just died out of nowhere.. Its on my desk as a reminder also.. wink.gif
sdat1333
wow
well like i said i was upset about it but i just have to take the attitude that i cant change it now so just deal with it
