  1. What is it I am missing here? The review has an overall favorable tone, yet the board consistently tested near last in the pack. It did not show stock or OC performance to beat but ONE of the other MOBO's tested, so why a favorable tone to the review? At $220 I would demand MUCH better performance.
  2. Crap, I did swap PSU's, and I don't know if I used a new cable or an old one. And yes, all 4 drives were on a single power cable. That may have been it. On the good side, I found a good local place and the machine is up and running with the 2TB drive. All the other components are OK. The SSD and Blu-ray will get returned and I will re-install them when they come in. And I will separate the cables between the two power supplies......................
  3. No virus, I ran regular scans. There were no events that I could see causing this, but every drive that was hooked up when I booted the system the first time will not respond now. The DVD that was NOT hooked up still works. So apparently something happened at boot up. I did not see anything. The only outages were back in August when Sandy hit, and we did not get flooded, just lost power for 3 days. The computer functioned fine afterward, and I did not even have these parts then. Thanks again for your help.
  4. Ok.....My PSU tester indicated I was getting proper voltage, and my old DVD working confirmed it. I also hooked up a fan via Molex, it worked. 2 of the 5 cables I tried were brand new, came with the MOBO. No joy. Set up on the box, actually, not the bag. 6-pin power connection was connected. I was VERY careful of the standoffs, I made that mistake once before. Tried each of the 3 drives individually, using each of 5 cables, in each SATA slot. Yes, 120 boots, on each MOBO. I have been at this since 9 am. No joy. I have an external HD enclosure, so I hooked up each of the drives in that and plugged it via USB into this laptop. The HDD's did not spin up, and were not recognized by the laptop. The SSD was the same. It makes me wonder if something happened that blew all the drives. As the Blu-ray is reacting the same as the HDD's, but the DVD from the old machine worked, I now suspect I somehow blew all those drives. I have one other drive, my external backup, but I am afraid to hook that up because it is my only backup. I don't have any other way to test the drives. My path now looks like seeking outside help. I have a feeling that having to use my Dining room for this work is killing me. I have no dedicated space for this stuff anymore, and I think I am paying for it on this build. I think I will RMA the MOBO, and then look for a shop to assemble it for me where they have the proper setup to do it. I hate giving up, I really enjoy doing these builds, but I enjoy the computer more and at this point I just want it working. Thanks for all your advice, it was all good. Wevsspot, your info on this particular MOBO was critical. I still don't think the MOBO is bad, but am going to RMA it anyway. Might as well start fresh.
  5. "-"5v was what I meant. Things just got stranger. I dissasembled the machine, and set up the old MOBO. Now IT CAN'T SEE MY HDD's! My old DVD drive was found, but none of the HDD's or the SDD are detected by BIOS. I have 5 wires, and have tried all the slots. I don't get it. You cannot imagine how frustrated I am. Two HDD's, one with Win7 and the other with Linux Mint, and neither can be found on TWO different MOBO's? With different PSU's. CRAP!
  6. Well, the SATA power connections test OK. The tester shows 12v, 5v and 3v but not a -5v for the SATA power connector. Those are all lit. Just for s#$% and giggles I hooked my old PSU up. Now, my vid card was not working in the old setup, but the SATA ports were. With the old PSU everything stayed the same. I am giving up and putting my old machine back together. I will RMA the MOBO.
  7. Things may be clearer now. I took the machine apart, have the MOBO on the anti-static bag, and when I plugged it in, the PSU does nothing. Totally dead. it was running in the machine yesterday, but out of the case the fan does not even turn on. I double checked the power wire, getting 120v AC as expected. Just for fun, I checked continuity between the two power pins in the power cord slot, no continuity. Should I not have cont between those? UPDATE, realized I need to jump the 24 pin connector to get the PSU on, I just plugged it into my tester and the PSU came on. The tester shows no light on the -5v. I got the same on my old PSU, which is why I was replacing it. Now, I tested the PSU yesterday, and the -5v was lit. Could the -5v connection be causing the SATA problems?
  8. Yes, the pins look good. I checked that before I installed the CPU.
  9. BTW, this is the complete system I am trying to build. Intel Core i7-3770 Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard OCZ Vector Series VTR1-25SAT3-128G 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC HITACHI Deskstar 7K3000 HDS723020BLA642 (0f12115) 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive (RMA shipped back to me last week, expect delivery this week) CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory LG Black 10X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal 12X Blu-ray Combo Drive COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO RR-212E-20PK-R2 Continuous Direct Contact 120mm Sleeve CPU Cooler Thermaltake Smart Series 850W PSU EVGA GeForce GTX 660 FTW Signature 2 02G-P4-2663-KR Video Card - 2GB GDDR5, NZXT M59 Case (4 120mm case fans)
  10. I know RMA is the "preferred" solution, but I am sick of paying shipping fee's. I will try the bare bones assembly tomorrow. Everyone will be out of the house, so I can use the dining room table for the job. Also, I learned most of what I know about computers by trying to fix stuff like this, so I want to try to get an answer. Even if it takes longer, if I learn more, it's worth it. LOL, I used to always bare bones the build first, but it was because I couldn't see the pin settings or jumpers inside the case............
  11. Well, no joy. I flashed the BIOS without problem. I hooked the SSD, the Optical Drive, and one of the WD HDD's to each of the ports one at a time, none detected. I then noticed that I had a front eSATA port connected, and disconnected it. No change. I flashed the BIOS again, no change. Any other ideas? EDIT: I am going to take Wed off from work, and re-assemble the machine. Take the MOBO out, check it for defects, make sure I don't have a short somewhere........If that does not work, I will try a different case. I have a clunky old one that I never used, maybe that will clear it up. If anyone has any other ideas, I am open to anything. Voodoo is OK, but I won't kill any chickens.............
  12. wevspot,I 'think" I saw both enabled to AHCI mode, but not certain. I can flash the BIOS, this board makes it very easy. I will do as you said when I get home from work. Thanks
  13. I checked the power cable, and it was fine, but I switched to a new one anyway without change. The data cables were in use in the old machine without problem, but again I tried brand new cables, no change. I just can't believe my bad luck. This board was a replacement for an RMA'd board that was no good, so I gave up and bought a new one. This is the third bad board I have gotten. I have gone over my build procedures, but I can't find anything wrong. And yes, I have read the tutorials. This is not my first build. I just never had this much trouble before.
  14. I just installed an ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with an i7 and 16 gigs of memory, as well as a new 128gig SSD. The board posts up, but goes into the BIOS configuration. It cannot see any of the 3 HD's or the Optical drive connected to the SATA ports. I tested the power supply and cables and they are good, and my VGA card is OK. It is just anything connected to SATA. Any suggestions? Does this MOBO have some obscure settings I need to change? BTW, I reset to default, no change.
