I bought a set of the amplified, non-folding version of those (the HPA2: http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/efhpa2/home.aspx) about a week and a half ago. I can't honestly think of a single shortfall other than they get a little uncomfortable after wearing for about 4 hours. I don't think the amplified version suffers from the same timber changes on the center channel as the X-52 though (perhaps the amplifier has a response curve built in?).

Hmm, interesting... well the X-52 and HPA2 have different driver layouts, and the earcup housings are different designs. Maybe this is why the centre channel is a bit strange on the X-52...

Possibly. The X-52 don't look like they are open back either, which probably plays a huge role in the overall sound.
