Every non-powered external I have requires dual plugs. Many companies rely on motherboard manufacturers supplying more power than the spec though.

 

I own 3 Seagate, 2 WD drives, and none of them have 2 ports for data and power. All of them have 1 USB2/3 port, and all of them are5400rpm drives. :ph34r:

I bet all of them need more than what a single plug is allowed to provide as well. :)
