I miss Jetpack. Why did you have to bring it up?!
However, the best 16 bit game(s) I can think of is/are Castle of the Winds 1 & 2. Best description I can think of is Diablo before Diablo, and better. In some ways, it really is one game. The first one was released as shareware to get people to buy the second game, which would import your character from the first. Essentially the first game was the demo, and when you started the second game without a prior save, you were just given the experience levels you should have gotten from the first game.
