You need IvyBridge to run in PCIE 3,0. Sandybridge runs in PCIE 2.0 in both Z68 Extreme and Z77 motherboards.

For the vast majority of us - and all pc gamers can get enough all round performance out of a Sandy Bridge setup. The quad core i7 2600 & i5 2500 are still the recommended processors. If you can afford, or actually need the extra memory support offered by SB-E, go for it but the wise money says rather go with the Z77 platform.
