Hey, I've been struggling trying to find out what I should use to increase my WiFi connection so I can play games like TF2 and Garry's Mod. I know, WiFi is terrible for online gaming, but I don't have too much other choices. I can't move my router and I'm using a desktop, not a laptop, so I cannot simply move my computer (I also can't move it due to the lack of space in my house).

Anyways, I was wondering whether I should get a wireless repeater or a wireless adapter. I've somewhat singled it down to two different products (one a repeater and one an adapter) and just wanted to know if they were any good or if someone could suggest one for me.

Granted a wired connection is better but you should be able to play games via a decent WiFi connection and it certainly isn't terrible.

What's your signal strength like?

Speedtest and ping?

Who is your ISP?

I game over WiFi all the time! Get a good 5GHz N+ router and receiver if your worried about it, but I only us the 2.4ghz channel on mine and it supports my gaming as well as my wife watching Netflix on the other computer just fine. I can pull what I'm paying for from Comcast though it and probably have a buffer that I could increase into if needed.

Meh I have crap router and a built in wifi receiver and my speeds are alright(half of wired cause i'm using g) and the latency is double ~56Ms.... so do Paul's tests.

Gaming over WiFi aren't bad at all, I have this and this hooked up on my rig (around 6 metres apart from each other) Playing BF3 without any problems.. (<50 Ms usually)
And it's blocked by 2 slabs of concrete walls from the living room to my room.

Using Wireless LAN should not cause you an issue, I have three machines that game on it at once with no issues using a regualr N router.

you have to change your router settings. while wifi may be limited compared to a lan connection the ping should be the same with a good setup.

get a good router that doesn't break the bank (like netgear dual band, $45) and a wireless card that is hardware based, not software. Most are not cheap.

second, setup the router to within a channel that is not used. wireless g and n both share frequencies that are very common. the best way to get around this is for wireless G, to check all 11 channels and find the one that doesn't cut out very often and for N set it to 40mhz on a odd channel.

Even if you had good equipment, leaving everything at default settings will be interfering with other wifi around you. my apartment has 15 other routers within the same building.

Definitely something wrong with your router considering even Wireless G is still faster than probably atleast 60% of home user's internet speed, Wireless N probably like 95% (again these are groundless statistics but they can't be that far off)
