Linux Mint - based on Ubuntu but far better, in my opinion. Check it out! Also, distrowatch.com is a cool site to check out for linux distros. They have a pane on the right side that lists top distros by homepage hits per day.

Ubuntu is nice for a desktoop machine. Lots of people are raving about Linux Mint too.
OpenSuse is much better for a server.
