Nope, you pick a tank and then randomly get put into a map. You might be interested in War Thunder. It allows you to take multiple tanks of one nation into a random map and you get to choose which of the tanks you selected to play until they all run out.

Yeah, that approach is too unrealistic for the rest of the game. Even in WWII, armies tried to equip their tanks for terrain like how an auto cannon was not good for densely wooded areas. You should have the chance to at the very least, change your main gun before a match starts. I always hated tier 1 battles in wide open maps where close combat makes the auto cannons next to worthless. I loved my T1 and the birkit gun but when you got put on that valley map with the castle, that auto cannon was now worthless because you had almost no chance of getting close enough to use it.

Single tank progression its pretty streamlined. The highest gun is usually the best option with few exceptions. You have a little more variety of guns in the lower tier tanks, but as you progress further its a bit different.

Gave Aslian XVM Config + Mod Pack a try. I should have been using this sooner. Lets you customize a lot of stuff and gives you a preview of them before installing.
