I saw this Windows 7 Professional OEM for 139.99 dollars at Microcenter.com and I'm thinking about ordering one. I'm not really sure what's OEM is... I know its come with 1 dvd. I heard it can fresh install 1 time?
Thanks |

OEM is a one time install. No it's not. The difference between an OEM and retail, are primarily these: -retail comes in a fancy box, while the OEM only is sort of a small magazine (http://softline.com.au/images/XPPro-OEM.jpg) -Retail has 2 discs: one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit. Retail has only one of these. -You get less support for OEM, and once you've opened the box you can't return it. - OEM can be installed on one motherboard. Once you've activated windwos, there's no going back. you have to use that exact motherboard or it will not work. However , I've installed my windows xp OEM on four different computers, and they all work fine. *confused* EDIT: You can reinstall OEM as many times as you want. I've bought system builder version of operating systems, and have installed / reinstalled. It is tied to the motherboard. It'll make you reactivate if you change your hardware too much, but I've never had trouble reactivating online. I haven't used retail, so I can't comment in that aspect.

Just wanted to ask a question to those who have already installed Win7 from an OEM disk. The licensing states that you must use the MS OPK (OEM Preinstallation Kit) to install the OS. Has anyone actually used the OPK? I would gather that it isn't required (outside of the licensing wording) in terms of loading Win7 from the disk or I would have read about people having yet another MS hoop to jump through. I just ordered the OEM version (Home Premium 64 bit, system builder) and was just curious as to whether I need to mess around with the OPK software just to get it installed?
