I am more so impressed with the frame rate jump in most games, things are definitely smoother.

The frame rate gains are some of the best reasons to upgrade to an actual sound card. Sure, modern onboard solutions can sound ok.. but for gaming, they bring things down too much. With a sound card, the CPU doesn't have to work overtime to provide the audio so you are gaining some ground there. In some cases, it can be up to 25% of an increase in frame rates all by dropping in a dedicated sound card. Glad its worked out well for you, enjoy the games again!
