So some of you may remember a few days back I had posted about how I was trying out windows vista 32 bit on my desktop. And how I had some annoying problems and overall was really displeased with it and went back to 32bit xp.

Now that thread turned into a giant 'flame / this is better than that' war so I stopped posting in it early on.

Now down to the point. I since then have gotten a 64bit version of vista and installed with my 32bit key. Shabam works no problem. Install goes smooth no complaints.

I load up all my drivers, everything goes without a hitch. I play some music to see if the sound issue I was having with the old 32bit install was still there, and my music is crystal clear. So then I load up some games first on the chopping block was Far Cry 2. (I put my OC back on my graphics and CPU)

Previously in windows xp I was only able to run everything maxed with the exception of shaders and shadows. Soon as I brought these over 'high' settings to 'very high' (highest setting) I'd drop strait down to 10 fps. With these on high settings I was getting between 35-50 frames. Not bad considering my hardware. But alas I couldn't really max it out and make it look all pretty.

So anyway, now I get into the game with vista 64bit and first thing I do is max everything out. (no AA) Load into the game and I'm getting 50-65 frames... I go back to the options to make sure I do in fact have everything maxed and sure enough I do. So I was baffled at first, somehow now I can max out Far Cry 2 (which I shouldn't even be able to do with my hardware int he first place) with vista 64bit but can't in anything 32bit. So I load up crysis max it out and same thing looks amazing and runs smooth as silk. Granted in a few places it can dip down to 25-30 frames but its to be expected with my hardware.

So moral of the story is. Vista 64 bit makes me happy in the pants.

And I'll be ordering up my eVGA GTX260 SSC edition pretty soon to go along with this. I'll hopefully be pulling some even nicer frames in all my games with that. Can't wait!

Finally, someone who's not bashing Vista.

<3

I'm glad it worked out for you, but maybe you had conflicting drivers earlier and it was just the reformat that helped out?

Maybe having 4GB on 32-bit was somehow eh?

Though I prefer 64-bit, I've been using Vista 32 on my laptop (since January) and haven't had any issues...though obviously laptops are pre-built and even a company like Dell isn't stupid enough to include incompatible components and drivers laugh.gif

I wouldn't say that, I got a laptop (Non-tablet) shipped with the tablet driver cds. I'd say that's pretty incompatible drivers tongue.gif
