ha ha.... while the LS series of engines are pretty great the 350 original small block is still pretty potent and no boat anchor... that goes to the 2nd gen LT1/LT4 engines... my 13:1 340 incher holds its own ;)

Yeah, but I don't want to totally screw up the balance of the car. That extra 100+ pounds for a SBC over an LS1 saves me very little money (since the tranny, adapters, and extras are the bulk of the cost) and loses me any hope of a well-handling car.

As a former Auto Tech...With that many miles, I'd strongly suggest that you have the block hot tanked and replace all the freeze plugs too.

I'm going to clean the block myself and perhaps do the freeze plugs. They aren't leaking or anything close to it but it might be cheap insurance to just do them while it's out.

Ha ha I wasnt suggesting you change engines, although that would be a fun project but not within budget.

I'm sure a fresh rebuild will make the car feel better in terms of performance...

This should be pretty awesome.

Definitely do a write-up with it too, I love reading detailed logs.

:D

EDIT-

Obviously you're going to write about it... but I mean like a more in depth look into what you're doing.

what size rings and bearings did you order. Just wondering since you havene't even checked the cylinder wall or the crank. also are you planing on doing the top half at all. good luck and please post some more engine porn lol.

Stock since I haven't had any issues with compression or oil pressure.

If the crank ends up being too worn for stock ill grab another set but there's no sign of wear at this point.

Top end was done last fall with a rebuilt head and valve job. :)

i work at an auto parts store and we just today took in a running 2008ish 5.3 for a core, i thought about paying the core charge myself and taking that thing home,

back story on the core, it was in a way custom tahoe suv thingy and the customer really thought he needed a new one, the owner of the shop tried to tell him otherwise, but i guess the customer just liked throwing money away so he took the job

i'm also very weary of light weight flywheels, part of the function of a flywheel is storing rotational energy, and it uses its mass to do that, ive never used one, i'll leave them for the race cars, not for me i guess,

i could be way wrong and the weight of a flywheel doesn't matter that much for idle or drivability

Ok I was just wondering. sounds like your on the right track. also I have access to alldata at home if you need any specs you cant find our anything. I just did a 4.0 in a jeep last month and it was fun I also just bought another grand cherokee with a bad 4.7 so I'm getting ready to jump into that.
